“With the way you smell now, if you ran into a wild wolf outside, you could probably scare it off without even showing your beast soul.”
“Huh?”
“And those snakes on the mountain too-you wouldn’t need your beast soul or any herbs. Your scent alone could drive them away.”

Annelise scratched her head. Is this the intimidation of the Four Calamities? Why didn’t it show up before then…
“Riven, have you ever seen one of the Four Calamities?”
He nodded, saying he’d seen one of them. “I’ve seen Karnyx. It isn’t shaped like your beast soul, so we can rule that one out.”
“Wait-you knew I was one of the Four Calamities?”
Riven nodded again and said that before coming here, he’d met with the High Priest. No one yet knew which of the remaining three she was. And he added that this wasn’t the reason he came-it wasn’t important right now.
“This isn’t important right now?”
“Right. I’ve been walking around the tribe these past few days and saw some cubs near the outer edge-they’ve contracted a pox plague, all running a high fever. After I reported it to the High Priest, he rushed over immediately and asked me to bring you to take a look.”
Annelise froze. She remembered the High Priest’s daughter-she had started with then broke out in strange blisters… and eventually died.
Don’t tell me that disease is back…
She thought about it briefly and said, “Let’s go. Tell me everything you know on the way.”
At the same time, she called out to Evan. “No one is allowed to leave until I come back-stay right here. Keep the air flowing, and make sure Adrian doesn’t stay in bed! And don’t let anyone enter. No matter who it is, don’t open the door. Stay at least ten feet away and cover your mouth and nose.”
Evan immediately recognized how serious this was. “Don’t worry. I’ll handle it.”

With that, Annelise set off with Riven.

Along the way, she thought, If the High Priest hadn’t asked him to fetch me, I doubt Riven would have come at all.
She kept glancing at him until Riven quietly scooped her under his arm and lifted off into the air again. He said it was faster this way.
“You came into contact with the sick cubs-are you okay?” Annelise asked.
Riven hesitated before replying. “Of course I’m fine. The heat I emit is enough to burn off any illness.”
And he had noticed something: all the sick ones were cubs, roughly under 14 years old. None of the adult females had fallen ill. His initial guess was that it related to spirit energy.
After all, most females began to develop spirit energy slowly after age 15, since they could bond with a male at 18. And even males before bonding weren’t completely without spirit energy-it depended on race. The stronger the race, the stronger the spirit energy.
“Like me—with how I can generate fire, my spirit energy alone could keep me from going feral past 25. That’s a difference in itself. Rokky should be fine. Adrian should also be fine-he’s a drakovore. As for Hudson… he should be a nine-tailed fox. His spirit energy is increasing every day I can feel it. It changes by the day. Evan… is harder to say.”
Annelise thought Riven was unbelievably sharp. Everything he pointed out was exactly what she needed to know. But she felt a strange awkwardness inside. Riven never once mentioned how he felt about being bonded. He didn’t show his usual explosive temper, and that unfamiliar gentleness made her feel off balance.
They fell silent after he finished explaining. He didn’t speak again-he only carried her through the air as they traveled, neither close nor distant.
Unable to hold back, Annelise said, “Riven, after we bonded, what’s… What’s your next plan? I mean-did you want to return to your own race, or stay in this tribe?”
She explained that the tribe would likely migrate once winter ended, so they didn’t need to build too many houses-just enough to survive the cold.
Riven listened but didn’t respond. After a long moment, he finally said, “Annelise… I’m sorry.”
