Riven stayed silent. He didn’t answer her. Maybe he didn’t know what he wanted to do either.

He won’t accept breaking the bond either. Great, Annelise mused.

Before long, Riven brought her to the outer edge of the tribe, where the cubs with pox plague were being kept. And the High Priest was indeed already there.

He was inspecting each cub’s pustules one by one. The moment he saw Annelise, he hurried over, grabbing her hand. “It’s the same illness! It’s the same sickness my daughter had! Annelise, please-look at them. Tell me what this is. I must… I must understand!”

Annelise noticed the color drain from his face and quickly tried to calm him. “I know. Don’t worry-just let me take a look first.”

She approached a male holding his cub. The cub’s face looked mostly fine, nothing particularly visible. But when she lifted the little one’s sleeve-there was a whole cluster of pustules.

“This is… this is smallpox.”

She inspected carefully. In the world she came from, smallpox had long been eradicated. Everyone had been vaccinated; the disease survived only in textbooks.

After confirming it multiple times, Annelise said, “It’s smallpox. It spreads fast and affects large groups. Considering the spirit energy of adult shifters, I can say adult females should be s for now-they won’t catch it. But cubs the same age, or anyone with weak spirit energy, become infected. Even some elderly shifters or males with extremely low spirit energy guaranteed to be safe. For now, everyone needs to be isolated immediately.”

The cub’s parents were stunned.

“What is this ‘isolated’ thing?”

“It means putting all these sick kids in one place, and no one else is allowed to touch them. Their food and water should be delivered only by females with strong spirit energy.”

Annelise herself was safe-she was one of the Four Calamities, likely the strongest spirit energy in the entire tribe.

“Can they be saved?” The High Priest rushed to ask.

“Once someone survives smallpox, they’re immune for life. Meaning they’ll never get it again. Those who haven’t had it need cowpox to build immunity-to prevent infection. But for those who are already sick… there’s no special cure. Their own immune system has to fight it off.

“But I can prepare herbs to reduce heat and clear toxins, and herbs that strengthen immunity. Make sure they stay hydrated, and keep them cool-put a cool cloth on their forehead.”

She added that she couldn’t guarantee every cub could be saved. It was a contagious disease- she could only do her best.

“I’ll go back and prepare the medicine now. Follow what I said. And burn any place the sick cubs have been.”

The cub’s parents hesitated. “Burning everything will take a lot of firewood… We barely have enough stored for winter…”

“Let me think-”

Riven stepped forward. “I can burn it. I can generate large-scale flames. Ever since the bond, my fire has been stable. I’ll do it.”

Annelise turned to look at him.

Riven didn’t owe the tribe anything. From his perspective-he believed they’d copulated, but Annelise denied it, and everyone questioned whether he forced the bond. He didn’t even know if there was a future between them. Why should he help her tribe?

But he still did.

And once all the nearby cubs had been moved indoors and confirmed safe, he began raisi his palm and releasing fire.

This time, the flames in Riven’s hand didn’t flicker or lose control at all. They burned exactly where he aimed, clean and precise.

To make sure the adults who had carried cubs didn’t bring contamination into the home, Annelise also suggested boiling water so everyone could wash themselves thoroughly in

separate areas.

As she prepared to head back, the High Priest followed anxiously. “Annelise, is there anything I can do? Anything at all? Or those detox herbs you mentioned-the ones that strengthen immunity-should I help prepare them?”

Annelise gave him a quick look. Poor Mr. Allen-he even memorized the word ‘immunity.’ He definitely has no clue what it means, but he still tried so hard to remember.
