Chapter 178 Taken Care Of
Right now, Annelise genuinely didn’t feel even a hint of annoyance from the High Priest.
“You’ve gotta warm up your stomach first. Then you can eat.
“I thought you were just gonna nibble on a piece, but girl, you nearly bit my whole hand off. You inhaled the entire thing!
“And if you’re eating that much, then stay lying down. Don’t even think about getting up yet.”
After making sure she finished a small bowl of warm water, the High Priest patiently asked, “Feeling any better?
“You want another bite of meat?”
“Yeah…”
He grabbed another warm cloth and gently wiped her face. Then, using his fingers, he brushed the tears from the corner of her eyes.
“This time, eat slowly, alright? Small bites.”
Annelise nodded.
The High Priest brought over another strip of roasted pork.
This one was a bit smaller.
The second the smell hit her nose, Annelise nearly lunged for it.
She was starving. It smelled amazing. She wanted it so bad.
But she knew she couldn’t devour it all at once.
Still, the hunger was insane. It felt like she hadn’t eaten in centuries.
The High Priest watched her chew in tiny bites and held the meat up for her with unwavering patience.
When Annelise reached up to take it herself, he said, “Nope. Hands off. I know you. You’ll get greedy and sneak another piece.
“Also, you’re still dizzy. Holding your arm up’s gonna make it worse.”
Annelise stared at his calm face and thought, So your arm doesn’t get tired?
Once she finally finished that whole piece, the High Priest knelt down and started wiping the floor with the shirt she’d thrown up on earlier.
Annelise stayed lying down and said, “Mr. Allen, you don’t have to do that.
“Aren’t you worried about the little ones? You should go check on them.”
The High Priest told her he’d already sent a few of the more seasoned women out to look for
COWS.
As for the little ones….
He paused what he was doing. The silence dragged out.
Then he said, “Annelise, truth is, those things… they aren’t supposed to be the chief’s problem. And definitely not mine, as acting chief.”
He said a real leader needed to know how to delegate.
Protecting the tribe was part of the job, sure, but being on the front lines of everything wasn’t.
“I just… when I saw that same illness that killed my daughter show up again, I panicked.
“But now that I know you’re treating it… now that I see this is actually a fight we can win, not some helpless nightmare, I’m not so scared anymore.
“I’ve got this feeling we’re gonna beat it. We will.”
He said he couldn’t just focus on winning while ignoring Annelise’s body falling apart.
“You keep doing your research, but don’t destroy yourself in the process.”
He added that not a single one of the kids had died yet.
Some of them had even started cooling down from their fevers-in just one day.
Annelise thought, it wasn’t entirely thanks to her.
