Chapter 177 More Research
Annelise’s room hadn’t changed at all, aside from the dim flicker of a beat-up oil lamp.
The mates were still waiting outside.
Hudson had reheated the roast chicken over and over. Eventually, it dried up and got rubbery. He figured it wasn’t fresh anymore, so he split it with Rokky instead. Then he boiled a few eggs to keep on standby.
Annelise had thrown herself into the research and lost all sense of time. Finally, she discovered that the new batch of herbs had an even stronger detox effect than the last.
They seemed to work better for shifter physiology too.
She immediately grabbed the herbs and opened the door, calling out to the High Priest.
“Mr. Allen, get someone to start digging up this herb. I can’t get them into pill form anytime soon, so just boil them and drink the liquid.
“Listen carefully. Boil them. Fully. You need the juice extracted, and the water should come out a yellowish-green. This isn’t just about soaking them in water. You have to actually boil it, till it bubbles, got it?”
The High Priest nodded at once. “Got it.”
“And keep the meals bland. Don’t overload on meat. Everyone needs a proper balance—meat, veggies, eggs, dairy. If there aren’t enough eggs, get them from me.
“As for water, replace it with the herb broth I’m boiling in here.”
Annelise rattled it all off in one breath and finally started to feel a bit tired.
But it still wasn’t enough.
She needed to start working on a vaccine for the ones who hadn’t caught smallpox yet.
“Mr. Allen, about the cows with those pustules… did you…
you… did you find…”
Before she could finish the word, her vision went black and she dropped.
“Ms. Crawford!”
At that same moment, Hudson, Adrian, Evan, and Rokky all jumped.
They rushed over from different sides.
But the High Priest had already caught her.
“Hey, sweetheart! What’s going on?!
“Don’t tell me you caught the virus too?!”
His voice was laced with panic.
Annelise shook her head. “No… I’m not…”
She never finished that sentence. Darkness swallowed her whole.
Her cows, her herbs-everything faded in an instant.
All she could hear were more and more voices shouting her name.
“Ms. Crawford! Ms. Crawford!”
“No no no! What’s wrong with her?!”
“Quick! Get her on the bed!”
Hudson yelled the loudest. “You stupid rabbit! You totally jinxed her!
“Look! Now something really happened to Ms. Crawford!”
Adrian’s mouth dropped open. He wanted to defend himself but ended up slapping himself across the face instead.
“God, my d*mn mouth! Can’t shut up for once!”
After all the commotion…
It was past midnight.
That was when Annelise slowly came to.
As he said that, he reached his arm behind her neck and carefully brought her into his chest.
Annelise wanted to say she could sit up on her own. But the second she tried to lift herself, her vision spun wildly.
All the meat she just ate came right back up, along with some acid.
She vomited all over the High Priest.
Right then, she knew what was wrong. She hadn’t caught anything. She was just starving.
That was low blood sugar.
She’d gotten way too absorbed in her work. Sure, she’d skipped a meal. But didn’t she have a whole chicken leg at lunch? How could this be so bad?
Her voice came out hoarse, her eyes tearing up from the nausea.
“Mr. Allen… I’m so sorry I threw up on you.”
But the High Priest wasn’t even the slightest bit mad.
“It’s fine, it’s fine. I told you not to push yourself. When little girls get too hungry, they throw up stomach acid. You’re just like my daughter used to be.”
The High Priest didn’t show a single ounce of disgust.
He peeled off his soiled jacket and tossed it to the floor.
Then he went right back to cradling Annelise, feeding her little sips of water.
He wiped her mouth. Cleaned up the bed.
He moved like someone who had done it a thousand times.
For the first time, Annelise truly felt what it was like to be cared for by a father figure.
Back at the orphanage, whenever she threw up or messed up the sheets, the staff would and sigh.
They never scolded her outright, but even as a kid, Annelise could tell when someone was annoyed.
