Chapter 27 Snowball

“Rabbit shifters are naturally sensitive… and after what she just did… I’m hurting too.”

Hudson turned his head, trying not to laugh.

As Annelise tossed and turned on the bed, she tilted her head and, without warning, bit Adrian’s tail.

Adrian’s fur bristled instantly, and he opened his mouth to scream.

But Hudson clamped his hand over it.

His scream turned into a muffled, stifled sound, barely escaping his lips.

Hudson raised a finger to his lips. “Shh. You can’t make a sound. We don’t want to wake Ms. Crawford. What if she wakes up angry and goes back to hitting people?”

Adrian had never seen Annelise in that state, but he knew no mate wanted to.

So he gritted his teeth, enduring the strange moment, and watched as Annelise finally let go of his tail and lay down, settling into sleep.

A small patch of his tail fur was damp with saliva, sticking together in clumps.

Just as Adrian moved to pinch Annelise’s face, he heard her voice.

“Snowball… Mm, Snowball… are you back? Are you here with me… So good…”

Both mates froze, thinking she was giving instructions.

But when they realized she wasn’t moving, it hit them-she was talking in her sleep.

“Ms. Crawford… talking in her sleep? Snowball? Is that your nickname?”

Hudson shook his head. “I’ve never heard that name before.”

“You’ve never heard it? But you were her first mate, right? Before even Evan.”

“I’m her first mate, yes, but I’ve really never heard Snowball.”

Annelise’s hand reached out, eyes still tightly closed.

“Snowball… come here… let me rub your cute ears, let me comb your long fur… let me hold

your big, fluffy tail…”

Adrian nudged Hudson.

“It’s you. Look around-only you have long fur and a big, fluffy tail. Evan doesn’t fit, Rokky doesn’t fit his tail’s like a leopard’s, sleek and firm. And me? I’m a rabbit; my tail’s always tucked in, a little round puff.”

Adrian urged Hudson to reveal his fox ears so the matriarch could touch them.

Obediently, Hudson did, and sure enough, Annelise’s hand reached out in her sleep, stroking as she murmured, “So good… Snowball, you’re so good… Thank you for coming back… I’ll brush your fur every day, I won’t leave you waiting… I’ll wash your dirty fur white again.”

Tears gathered at the corners of her eyes as she spoke.

Only when Annelise’s hand dropped and her breathing evened out did Hudson whisper, “It’s not me… I’m not the white fur one.”

Adrian realized it too.

“Yeah… she said she’d wash Snowball’s fur white. You’re red-furred. That means… before she even met you, she already had a shifter she liked? Are you… just a substitute?”

“I’m not!”

Hudson wanted to yell, but seeing Annelise asleep, he clamped his hand over his mouth, lowering his voice.

He added, “I’m not a substitute. In this tribe, the only foxes are from my parents’ litter. Aside from me-the lone red-furred fox-all my siblings are white. They’ve all long since paired with other females. Ms. Crawford has never interacted with any of my brothers, and none of them are called Snowball.”

Adrian tilted his head. “Maybe Ms. Crawford knew him in another tribe?”

“Impossible,” Hudson said. “She’s never left this tribe.”

Most females who left were from wealthy backgrounds, trading things they had for what they wanted.

But Annelise grew up relying on the kindness of others, and later developed a drinking habit. She had nothing to trade outside.

“So it’s simpler than that-Snowball must’ve just been a nickname she gave some other male

she liked.”

Hudson’s frustration boiled over. He flopped onto the bed and muttered, “Sleep!”

But his mind churned endlessly, replaying Adrian’s words: “substitute.”

The thought gnawed at him. Could it be she pretended to like red fur, just to fool him?

Adrian smirked, thinking, What’s his deal? He was lively just a moment ago, and now…

Besides, he’d only said “substitute” on a whim. Hudson had dismissed the idea himself—so what was he sulking about?

And that was how the night dragged on.

At dawn, Adrian went out to take care of his own discomfort, then confronted Annelise directly.

“Ms. Crawford… who is Snowball?”

Hudson panicked, grabbing Adrian to stop him, afraid of what she might say.

But Adrian didn’t overthink it. He blurted the question, and Annelise froze.

“How do you know?”

“Because last night you said it in your sleep.”
