Chapter 29 Letting Go of the Peacock
“You can’t do this!” She reached out a hand without hesitation. “Bite me!”
The pain must be unbearable, and Evan’s nose was already dotted with sweat.
He shook his head slightly. He stayed silent, enduring it.

Annelise shoved her hand into his mouth. “If you keep holding back, you’ll end up tearing your lips. Then I’d have to fix your mouth too. The tendon realignment will take a little longer -you might as well bite my
hand.”
It wasn’t really her hand she offered-it was the hardest knuckle of her fingers, pressed right into his mouth. By letting him bite her knuckle, she could protect herself from serious injury.
But once it entered Evan’s mouth, he barely bit. He just held it gently.
Annelise froze. He wasn’t biting at all. Frustrated and unsure what to do, she only sped up
rotation.
Finally, the procedure was done. Evan was drenched in cold sweat.

Annelise quickly pulled him into her arms. “Why didn’t you bite my hand? That kind of pain could have done serious damage to your body.”
Evan trembled violently. She hurried to give him water.
Finally, he rasped out, voice hoarse, “If you were the old Annelise, I would have bitten you— and you’d have hit me. If you’re not the old Annelise, then I definitely shouldn’t bite you…. Why should you pay for what she did to me? I’m already grateful that you treated my leg.”
“You…” Annelise couldn’t find the words.
He was too wounded, yet far too responsible. But inside, his spirit was fierce and unyielding.
Her heart ached for him.
Perhaps this kind of peacock really should be set free.
She thought for a moment. “After I heal your leg, I’ll let you go. I can even help you find a female that suits you better.”
She had wanted to see the peacock spread his feathers, but Evan wasn’t like the little fox who longed for a home.

He wasn’t simple like the strong rabbit. He wasn’t insecure like Rokky.
She shouldn’t bind someone like Evan.
“I’ll give you plenty of food. Take it and find a female you truly like.”
Evan’s breath hitched.

He wanted to speak, but no words came. He opened his mouth, only to cough violently.
Annelise said, “Drink some more water. Today I treated your tendons-you’ll need three days to recover. Then I’ll do the bone setting. After that, rest for another week, and you should be able to walk normally. No limping.”
She knew shifters healed quickly.
The claw marks Rokky left on her had vanished in less than two days.
Males healed even faster than females without a beast form.
Even injuries that would take months for humans would heal in a week for a male shifter after proper treatment.
Satisfied with her explanation, Annelise stepped outside.
Evan reached out, wanting to grab her-but his hand met only air.
He didn’t understand his own heart. He didn’t want to leave, but then realized he had no reason to stay. He didn’t love Annelise like Adrian did. Staying would only cause trouble for others. He clenched his fist tightly and hid it in his sleeve.
As if on cue, just as Annelise considered helping Evan find a suitable matriarch, someone arrived at the door.
That night, the third room was taking shape. Annelise invited her three mates over for dinner when a knock came from the courtyard.
Hudson was the first to rise. “Ms. Crawford, I’ll go see who it is. Could be a male looking to trade things with us.”
But when he opened the door, he hesitated. “Who are you?”
A female voice came from outside. “I… I’m looking for your matriarch.”
Annelise frowned and leaned forward. The woman outside was dressed nicely-not as flashy as

Clara, no feathers or trinkets, but her hair was tied in a high ponytail, and stones adorned her neck.
She came alone and carried nothing. She didn’t seem like she was there to trade.
Annelise stepped forward. “You’re looking for me? What is it?”
Hudson leaned close and whispered, “Ms. Crawford, she probably lives on the eastern side of the tribe. If she weren’t from that side, I’d know her.”
“The eastern side… What’s special about it?”
“That’s where the elders or the shamans live. She might be the daughter of an elder or shaman.”
“Oh.”
Annelise thought it over. A tribe elder was only somewhat useful when it came to choosing a candidate for chief.
As for shamans, their role was more practical-like calling for rain. If Evan were actually to be offered as a sacrifice, that would fall squarely on the shamans’ shoulders.
Having figured that out, she asked, “Hey, speak up. Why are you here?”
“My name is Holly Zane. I… I want a male from you.”
“Huh?”
“I want Evan…”
