It turned out she was the same female who had liked Evan back then, just like the original host -early twenties, barely past twenty-four.
But Evan hadn’t chosen her. He had chosen the original host instead.
At first, she had given up. But later, after hearing the original host drunkenly confess that she never actually mated with any males and only enjoyed tormenting them for pleasure, the thought of reclaiming Evan began to stir in her heart.
And recently, after the story of sacrificing poultry mates spread and Evan’s leg injury became known, she could no longer hold herself back.
“I’ll do whatever it takes-wild greens, even live game like chickens-to sever Evan’s bond. I want him… I want him as my mate.”
Annelise snapped her fingers. “I know exactly who you are. You’re Ms. Eight Baskets! The female who tried to win Evan with eight baskets of wild greens back then.”
“Yes, that’s me.”
Annelise pulled Holly into the house. “Come in. Go see Evan.”
Holly froze, completely caught off guard by Annelise’s move.
Evan was even more shocked-he hadn’t expected Annelise to bring her here.
“He’s no longer my male. We broke our bond long ago. If you want him, I want nothing in return. I don’t lack anything now. Most importantly, Evan isn’t my possession-I won’t trade him for anything. You just have to promise that you’ll treat him well. But you’ll have to wait a few days. I need to heal his leg before you take him.”
Evan stayed there, stunned,
He didn’t even know which part shocked him most.
Not her possession. She wanted nothing in return. The other female had to treat him well.
The Annelise he used to know would never say any of those statements.
Even Holly was taken aback. “Annelise… what happened to you? You’re… different from before.”
“Why is it that people are allowed to make mistakes, but never allowed to change?”

“Uh… I just thought you wouldn’t let a male go so easily.”

Annelise looked at Holly. “Let me say it again. I don’t drink anymore. Alcohol only leads to trouble. I won’t fall into the same downward spiral I used to.”
Holly glanced at Evan’s leg. The knee was slightly swollen, but clearly treated.
She swallowed hard. “You… can fix a broken leg?”
“Yes. Unless it’s been completely severed and lost, I can heal the rest. If you have patients like that, you can bring them to me. I don’t ask for much-small injuries, a few baskets of wild greens. Bigger injuries require chickens or wild boars, depending on the case.”
Holly pressed her lips together and asked, “How do you even know this? You grew up in the tribe, living off whatever was available. No one taught you… I mean, only the shamans could do these things. Who taught you?”
Annelise scratched her head. “Got struck by lightning one day… and just learned.”
She kept it simple-explaining it to the males and females in this shifter world would be pointless. Better to just make up something.
Then she remembered to ask Evan.
“Do you want to go with her? She traded eight baskets of wild greens for you before, right? That proves you knew each other. But… people change. If you don’t want to go with her, we can wait. Don’t worry about having a place to stay-you can stay here. That third room is almost finished anyway.”
Before Evan could answer, Holly reached out and grabbed his hand. “Evan, once your leg is healed, come with me. I’ve always liked you. Ever since you refused to be my mate, I’ve thought of you day and night-I can’t forget you. Don’t worry, you won’t have to hunt. My other mates can handle that. You can stay home and focus on weaving furs for winter.”
Evan lowered his head. Being asked to make this choice so suddenly felt overwhelming.
And deep down, he didn’t want to leave.
He glanced at Annelise. She said, “No rush. Your leg won’t be fully healed for a few days anyway.”
Holly stood and considered. “You can really heal injuries?”
“Yes. Does anyone else in your group need help?”

Holly shook her head. “It’s my father. Can I bring him tomorrow… and see if you can heal him before giving anything in return?”
“Sure. I wouldn’t feel right asking if I couldn’t heal him.”
Annelise thought to herself-if she healed her father, Holly would become her best
advertisement, spreading the word everywhere.
After Holly left, Evan called for Annelise from inside.
Annelise was curious-it was the first time he had called her in all these days.
She stepped back in. “Does your leg hurt? It might feel a little stiff at first, since the blood flow is returning, but it shouldn’t be too painful.”
“No… It’s not that. I mean… do you really intend to let me go?”
Annelise nodded.
She didn’t feel upset at all.
She was carefree. If Evan stayed, she’d be happy. If he wanted to leave, she wouldn’t force him
to stay.
After all, Evan had always hated the original host. He never got over it, and making him stay would only worsen his condition.
