Rokky and Annelise were watching from above.

Rokky winked at Annelise, silently asking whether he should jump down and save him.

Annelise reached out and pressed a hand against Rokky’s chest, signaling him to wait and watch.

At this distance—and in a world with no flying daggers or instant kill techniques-no one was dying in a heartbeat. If they needed to step in, they could do so at any moment.

Evan listened without shouting or making a scene. Instead, he said calmly, “Holly, then I’d advise you not to do it. You already know it’s wrong, so why put yourself through this? Annelise isn’t the same Annelise she used to be. She treated my leg. She finished building the house. She even hunted and prepared a lot of meat for her mates. Even if none of that has anything to do with you, Holly-she cured father.”

Holly sucked in a sharp breath.

Her mates, however, were immediately displeased.

“What are you implying?” one of them snapped. “You came back here willingly with Ms. Zane, yet you’re not taking Ms. Zane’s side. Instead, you’re defending that Annelise who beats mates? I remember she broke your leg. Healing you was the least she owed you. And you’re still protecting her are you sick in the head?”

Evan pressed his lips together. “I’m just stating the facts.”

Annelise let out a soft laugh.

Well now. The peacock was still on her side.

But if he cared this much, why did he leave in the first place?

She had thought Evan simply couldn’t get past his own mental barrier-that he disliked her, or believed she was still the original Annelise.

But listening to him now, that didn’t seem to be the case at all.

After the mates argued among themselves, Holly finally said, “How about this—you stay here for a few days. Let me think it over, all right? It’s late. We should rest. Evan, you can sleep in that small room by yourself.”

One mate sneered, “Hurry up and thank Ms. Zane. You get your own private room.”

Another added, “I really don’t see what a peacock is good for. We already have shifters who can weave cloth. He’s like a rabbit-nice to look at, but useless.”

Evan didn’t move.

“Holly, go tell Clara right now that you can’t do this.”

The peacock knew Holly too well.

Whenever she hesitated, it meant she would eventually do it anyway.

And it always ended badly.

Afterward, she’d regret it endlessly, beating her chest and cursing herself.

Holly pressed her lips together. “I… I’ll tell her tomorrow, okay? Just go ‘sleep. Please, go sleep.”

“If you wait until tomorrow, you won’t be able to say it,” Evan said urgently. “Holly, if you don’t go now, I will. Or I’ll go straight to Annelise.”

As he spoke, Evan turned to leave.

Holly’s mates immediately grabbed him.

“You traitorous b*stard, siding with outsiders! You want to tell that stinking female who beats people?”

Evan struggled weakly. “If I’d known you called me here to frame someone, I never would’ve

come!”

He had only thought that staying by Annelise’s side made him an eyesore.

He had only thought that he couldn’t accept a new Annelise just yet.

But now that he knew Holly wanted to harm Annelise, he was genuinely afraid.

Without realizing it, his thoughts had gone straight to Annelise.

Evan had never been strong.

His leg had only just healed; he had no strength to fight back.

Just as he was completely restrained and about to be struck unconscious, Annelise shot Rokky a look.

Rokky immediately understood.

He clasped his fists together and slammed downward with all his force.

Amid a thunderous crash, Rokky hit the ground first. Then he caught Annelise midair, holding her securely in his arms.

Everyone present was stunned.

“Thank you, Rokky,” Annelise said.

She jumped down from his embrace.

Several shifters wanted to rush forward, but none of them dared approach with Rokky standing there.

Evan never expected Annelise to appear at this moment.

Ignoring everything else, he blurted out, “Annelise, Holly wants to hurt you!”

Annelise pulled Evan to her side. “I heard. I knew it-when something feels off, there’s always a reason. Evan, are you okay? Your leg? Your body? Are you hurt anywhere?”

Evan shook his head.

Even now, she was worried about him.

At that moment, Holly didn’t know what to do anymore. She tilted her head up toward the ceiling, heart aching and chest tight.
