“I… I know…” Holly said haltingly. “She’s the chief’s daughter. Of course she’d never admit to something like that. That’s why this is so hard to deal with. If only Evan hadn’t followed me here…”

Annelise sat down beside her with a smile. “It’s not hard at all. If Evan hadn’t come, I wouldn’t have known Clara was still holding a grudge over what happened last time. Holly, let’s talk seriously.”

Holly swallowed. She could feel the danger radiating off Annelise, subtle but unmistakable.

“You already know everything. What’s there left to say?”

Annelise gestured for her to relax, her tone calm. There was still room to maneuver.

“I made such a big scene tonight that you can say you hadn’t even had time to act before Evan was taken back by me. From start to finish, that part isn’t the problem. What I want to know is this-why did Clara want to use you to get revenge on me? She’s the chief’s daughter. She could’ve just brought her mates to my house and caused trouble directly. She could’ve pinned any charge she wanted on me. I’m such a terrible female, right?”

Besides, Annelise thought, this was a tribe that had only just crawled out of its savage phase. How could they have someone that calculating?

Intelligence always rose with the size of the benefit at stake.

The greater the benefit, the sharper the mind.

When the benefit was small, people rarely bothered to think at all.

Holly hesitated, then said, “It’s probably because of the saintess selection. Annelise, you have no idea how much prestige you gained from the last sacrifice. The elders and the shaman still hate you, that’s true. But the males who no longer have to be sacrificed-and their families- think you did something right. And… even I, after getting to know you, can’t bring myself to hate you anymore.”

That was when Annelise finally understood.

The tribe’s saintess selection was, in fact, a way to prepare candidates for the next chief.

It was held once every three years. Any female between the ages of twenty-three and twenty- five could participate.

Through a series of trials, the strongest female would emerge as a saintess.

They were kept as reserves in case the chief ever died suddenly or was injured by a beast and could no longer lead the tribe.

When that happened, the saintesses would compete again, and the final victor-the most outstanding female-would become the new chief.

Annelise frowned. She still didn’t get it.

“Then why target me specifically in a tribe-wide selection?”

Holly sighed. “Technically, all eligible females can join, but you still need recommendations. In the past, no one paid you any attention. Now it’s different. You have prestige. She thinks that standing next to you in the selection would embarrass her. You’re such a ‘bad’ female, after all. But if Evan accused you and your reputation fell back to rock bottom, no one would recommend you anymore.”

Annelise raised an eyebrow.

So that was it.

Petty. Vicious. Annoying.

All this over something so small.

As if anyone actually wanted that worthless chief position. It wasn’t even as good as being the head of a village.

She let out a short laugh.

“Then I’ll definitely be joining the saintess selection. I’m not interested in being a saintess, but I am very interested in disgusting Clara.”

Annelise stood up again. “All right. Tonight, we’ll just say we came to take Evan back. That should give you something to report, right?”

“Uh… Yes. That works.”

Annelise tilted her head and glanced at the ceiling, then said to Rokky, “Smash the table.”

Rokky froze. “Huh?”

“Smash it.”

“Oh! Okay!” Rokky clenched his fist and brought it down. The table cracked apart and shattered into several pieces.

Holly clapped a hand over her mouth, her heart aching.

“My table! No, wait, you already punched a hole in my house! Why won’t you even spare my table?”

Annelise then told Rokky to smash the bed as well.

Holly nearly screamed.

“My bed! Winter’s almost here! Are you telling me to sleep on the floor?”

Only then did Annelise fold her arms and say calmly, “That’s what you get for trying to knock Evan out and refusing to let him leave.”

Holly craned her neck and shot back, “But I didn’t hit him!”

Annelise smiled. “If you had, it wouldn’t just be tables and beds. I might’ve burned the whole house down.”

“You-”

She must have been foolish to think Annelise had become nicer.

This Annelise was worse than before.

Worse in a way she couldn’t even put into words.

Annelise reached out a hand to Evan. “Come on, Evan. Let’s go home.”

Evan pressed his lips together, clearly startled.

“G-Go home?”

Annelise looked at him like it was the most natural thing in the world.

“You tried so hard just now to go back and warn us. You even said that if you’d known Holly was this kind of person, you wouldn’t have come at all. If you’re not going back, where else would you go?”

“I…” Evan looked flustered, his face faintly red.

Annelise laughed. “All right, let’s go. Look at you-you’re acting like I just showed up the

second you thought about me.”

“What kind of nonsense is that?”

Even so, Evan let Annelise take his hand and lead him away.

Holly was left alone in the house, wiping sweat from her face.

One of Holly’s mates finally muttered, “We… We really don’t dare provoke that tharok shifter. He punched a hole through the roof. That kind of strength is terrifying.”
