Chapter 36 Crossing Paths Again

“Yeah. Our roof is one of the most solid in the eastern area.”

Holly let out a long sigh. “Just wait… Our tribe’s about to fall into chaos. Even Clara’s mates probably couldn’t take on that tharok shifter.”

On their way home, Rokky kept his head down, silent as ever.

He stopped whenever Annelise did, carefully keeping his distance.

He knew Annelise had something to say to this peacock.

Sure enough, she paused and asked, “Evan, you still have feelings for me, don’t you?”

Evan sighed and turned his head away.

“In moments like this, the only thing I can think about is you. But I can’t really process these feelings.”

He admitted he couldn’t switch smoothly between the past Annelise and the new one.

He also said he didn’t seem to fit into cheerful, lively environments.

“When you’re joking around with Hudson and Adrian, I feel that I can’t force myself to say anything. I don’t know how to say those things. I’ve never been the kind of male to be playful. I’m boring. That’s my problem, not yours.”

Annelise let out a short, amused scoff.

“I don’t think that’s a problem. As long as your mind is on me, there’s no problem at all. If your thoughts were on someone else, then that would be a problem.”

She waved her hand casually, like it was nothing-just a matter of personality, a matter of fitting in. No need to force it.

“I get along with Hudson and Adrian fine, personality-wise. Look at Rokky-does he even talk? He’s always just part of the scenery.”

“Hmm?”

Evan didn’t understand “part of the scenery,” but he got the gist.

Annelise continued, “Hey, if you want to stay home, stay home. Do whatever you like. I remember peacocks aren’t great at chopping wood or hunting, but they sure know how to attract birds. Why not help me take care of the chickens? Those chickens see Hudson and think he’s going to eat them-they peck at him nonstop. Some social circles are just hard to fit into. I still can’t talk properly with Clara, either.”

Hearing that, Evan suddenly felt a weight lift from his chest.

Of course, it wasn’t the world that was the problem. It was him-he’d trapped himself in a dead end.

“Then, Annelise, make a new bond with me. I’m curious about the new you. I want to see where this goes.”

Annelise took his hand. “Okay. As for that nasty one who hurt you before… She’s dead. If you want revenge, I can help you figure it out.”

Evan was relieved when he heard that.

It was that strange, inexplicable feeling of suddenly not being afraid anymore.

Before, just seeing Annelise walk into the room had him tense, spine stiff as a board.

Now, he felt relaxed for the first time in a long while.

He couldn’t help but ask, “Annelise, did she die badly?”

Annelise thought for a moment. “Pretty bad, I guess. Her heart just stopped. One moment she was happy, the next… nothing. Gone.”

From Annelise’s perspective, a heart attack took just a few seconds. Pain wasn’t really a factor.

But if she didn’t say it that way, Evan would be left stewing in hatred. That was why she had to put it that way.

Evan asked again, “You said you’d help me get revenge… but she’s dead. How can you do that?”

“Burn something and curse her name,” Annelise said matter-of-factly.

Even in this shifter world, it was customary to burn offerings-sometimes chickens, sometimes ducks-for the deceased. She guessed it was roughly the same.

Evan laughed at that. The poise of a proper young gentleman returned to him. He finally relaxed completely.

“You’re new,” he said. “A real, living, breathing new version of yourself. You think differently from us. Totally differently.”

Suddenly, he stopped dwelling on the past. Annelise was right-everything she said was right.

He lowered his head slightly and said, “Go on. Bite me. I’ll use my own strength to help you live better-to help us live better.”

Annelise leaned forward, rose onto her toes, and bit Evan’s neck.

With that, Annelise had four mates now.

That evening, when Annelise brought Evan back, Hudson was the first to rush forward and hug him.

“Evan! I’m so glad you’re back!”

They’d known each other the longest, and had endured beatings together. Hudson never wanted Evan to leave.

Adrian just sat there, lips pressed together, silently thinking, Why’d he have to come back?

Originally, with only three mates, each got ten days a month with Annelise. Now, each could only get seven or eight days.

Great. Why come back at all? Should’ve stayed away.

Annelise said, “Evan’s my mate too. Tonight, he sleeps with me. No objections, right? You’ve all had

your turns, but he hasn’t yet.”

Adrian wanted to object so badly-but to no avail.

Even though sleeping didn’t necessarily mean mating, every extra day near Annelise increased

their chances.

Rokky stayed silent, letting everything Annelise said stand without objection.

Hudson quickly added, “No objections!”

Adrian’s temper flared. Was he the only one to have objections?

He glanced at Evan’s back, then at his own, comparing.

If everyone shifted into beast form, the peacock’s tail-like a living, shimmering fan-would be the most beautiful.

His own rabbit tail? Worthless.

“Why is it that as soon as he shows up, he gets to sleep with her?” Adrian muttered, bitterness lacing his voice.

Evan froze for a moment, then hurriedly said, “It’s fine if I don’t go. Whoever it’s supposed to be, it’s their turn.”

Annelise snorted.

“Don’t mind him. He just talks nonsense. It’s supposed to be you. I’ve never held you to sleep. And him? He already slept with me yesterday.”

Adrian stomped his foot. “That counts as sleeping? And I was with the little fox! By that logic, I only got half a session!”

Annelise snorted again.

“Then why don’t you sleep with Evan tonight, count that as another half?”

Adrian drew a deep breath, about to agree, but then thought better of it.

He had asked Rokky before about sleeping alone with Annelise. She would only lightly hold a mate’s tail-no squeezing, no biting.

That was manageable.

But with two mates at once, she would move in her sleep, fidget, and wiggle.

Could he endure that? No chance-it would be

agony.
