Reborn As A Beast Queen with Too Many Husbands to Pet novel Chapter 38

Chapter 38 Unexpected Growth

The next morning, Annelise woke with a start at Hudson’s panicked cry.

She sat up straight. “What’s wrong?”

Evan jumped up and looked outside too.

Hudson’s voice trembled with tears. “My tail feels so weird. It’s been painful and itchy since dawn… Am I getting that shifter skin disease the tribe talks about? Is my tail going to rot off?”

Adrian muttered from the side, “No way. That only happens in hot weather. It’s freezing now.”

The disease was common among heavily furred shifters-anything from itchy skin to red, pus-filled sores.

Rubbing her eyes and stifling a yawn, Annelise went out to check-and froze.

Hudson’s face was mesmerizing.

She almost tumbled down the steps. Evan caught her just in time.

This wasn’t the flirtatious fox she’d met the first day.

Today, the little fox radiated charm from every angle, an allure that made her heart race uncontrollably.

Shaking her head to clear it, she said, “Little fox, let me see your tail.”

She crouched down as she spoke. Hudson stiffened.

Being examined in front of everyone? He had to clamp his legs together.

“Eh?” Annelise gasped.

Hudson’s bright red fox ears drooped instantly.

“Is it really the disease? Ms. Crawford, tell me, I can handle it…”

“No, no. You’re growing a tail-a small one. Are you still in your development phase?”

Hudson shook his head. In his family, each sibling had only one tail. No one had two.

“Then… am I not my parents’ biological child? But that can’t be… So many males and females in the tribe watched me being born…”

Annelise studied him but saw nothing unusual.

“It’s not a disease. You’re actually growing a second tail. Adrian, Rokky, come see. Is the second tail already showing? Maybe it’s hidden behind that big fiery one?”

Adrian nodded. “It is, actually.”

Rokky agreed.

Annelise pressed lightly, making Hudson shiver. He scrambled to cover himself with his clothing.

Then Evan called out. “Ms. Crawford, come here. Something’s happening to me too.”

Annelise hurried over. Hudson exhaled in relief and retreated to his room, still clamping his legs.

Evan had gone to feed the chickens.

As soon as he scattered the grain, the chickens and ducks charged at him.

Before, they’d only gathered calmly, showing no hostility.

Now they pressed against him, bumping him over, scattering the grain everywhere.

They weren’t even eating. They were rubbing against him, showing affection.

Annelise watched, stunned.

“They… They really like you…”

“I’ve never had this happen before. Even when I helped feed my family’s chickens and ducks, nothing like this ever happened.”

Even more astonishingly, the chickens and ducks started laying eggs.

Normally, they might lay once every two or three days.

Today? Huge eggs, all at once.

Annelise pressed her lips together. Something strange happened to the little fox and the peacock at the same time. This couldn’t be a coincidence.

“Evan, you said before your ability makes you especially compatible with birds. They’re drawn to you, right?”

“Yes. I don’t have claws, so I can’t hunt.”

Annelise called out to Hudson. “Little fox, come here. Catch me a chicken.”

Hudson shot off in a blur. By the time Annelise looked again, he already had a chicken clamped in his mouth.

He was much faster than before.

“You’re both improving,” Annelise said. “Is that because of the bond?”

Evan and Hudson both shook their heads. They didn’t know.

They had never experienced anything like this, nor had they heard of it happening to anyone else in the tribe.

“When strange things happen in the tribe,” Evan said, “we usually go to the chief, the elders, or the shaman. They tell us what to do next.”

Hudson added, “So… should we go find the chief or the shaman now?”

Annelise hurriedly stopped them.

“Absolutely not. All of you, listen. From now on, don’t tell the chief, the elders, or the shaman anything. I don’t think they understand a thing. They’d just mess around and end up burning you or offering you as a sacrifice. If that happens, you’re both done for.”

Hudson’s fox ears snapped straight up in fright.

After a moment’s thought, Annelise said, “Let’s observe for now. Don’t panic. If anyone has physical pain or illness, I can treat it. But if it’s not sickness, there’s no need to expose ourselves.”

She pinched her own chin, thinking.

Then she said to Evan and Hudson, “Catch a few more chickens and ducks. This winter, our eggs are going to pile up basket after basket.”

She had a feeling that before long, she would become the richest female in the tribe.

Chapter 39 The Name That Lingered

Before she knew it, Annelise’s life in the tribe grew better and better.

Some people even came to her specifically for treatment after seeing Holly’s father fully recover his leg, bringing chickens and ducks as payment.

But the more comfortable her life became, the more Annelise missed Snowball.

The Samoyed she had once kept as a pet.

“Wide-open spaces, an easy life. I wouldn’t have to lock you in a tiny rental apartment every day anymore,” she murmured. “If only you could come here with me.”

Thinking about Snowball so often during the day made it easy for him to appear in her dreams at night.

More than one mate heard Annelise talking in her sleep.

One morning, when Rokky was wiping her face with warm water, he heard her mumble, half- asleep, “Snowball, one of your teeth is bad. You can’t chew bones anymore, okay?”

Rokky’s hands slowed.

He knew Annelise wouldn’t like him. He was always prepared to be abandoned by her, to return to the forest and become a mindless beast again.

So he didn’t take it to heart. He continued to serve her quietly.

As long as he could stay sane, he was content.

Evan heard that name too.

It was on a stormy night when he was keeping her company in bed.

The wind howled outside, rain pounding down hard. When Evan got up to close the window, he heard Annelise call out softly, “Snowball, it’s raining. You can’t go outside to play. Let’s stay home and play together, all right?”

Evan frowned.

Whenever Adrian asked him about Snowball, he always pretended not to care. He said it was normal for Annelise to have multiple mates.

But that one name-Snowball—had clearly reached deep into Annelise’s heart, stirring a jealousy he couldn’t explain.
