Chapter 39 The Name That Lingered
He tried to probe further.
“What does Snowball look like?”

“He’s covered in thick white fur, with the sweetest smile. When he’s happy, he wags his tail. He’s the cutest…”
The more Evan listened, the more he felt that, aside from the fur color, Snowball sounded exactly like Hudson.
The little fox wagged his tail whenever he was happy.
Adrian had heard the name more than once as well, especially when he slept alone with Annelise.
“Your fur doesn’t feel good… Bring my Snowball instead…”
“What do you mean my fur doesn’t feel good?” Adrian muttered under his breath. “This is standard rabbit fur, all right?”
At first, he worried about waking her up. After all, this female might turn into the violent maniac Hudson had warned him about.
Later, he realized that when Annelise was dreaming, nothing could wake her.
Hudson, for once, gave up his turn to stay with her and let Adrian take it.
His reason was simple: he had no idea how to deal with Annelise’s sleep-talking.
Adrian waved his hand dismissively. “Why bother staying in bed? The four of us can talk in the courtyard. Once Ms. Crawford falls asleep, nothing can wake her.”
Evan asked, “Talk about what? We’re not very familiar with you.”
To be precise, aside from Hudson, he wasn’t close to the rabbit or Rokky at all.
He was even a little afraid of Rokky.
Especially after seeing how he ate dead chickens-one bite to the neck, sucking the blood, then eating the rest.
Adrian snorted. “Let’s talk about Snowball, that shifter. Don’t tell me you’re not jealous or angry.”
Rokky gave him a questioning look, perfectly conveying that he truly wasn’t angry.

“As long as Ms. Crawford doesn’t break the bond and let me go mad again,” he said calmly, “she’ll be my matriarch for life. What she does, who she likes-I don’t care. Even if she can’t obtain something, I’ll do my best to help her get it.”
Adrian rubbed his forehead. “Fine. I’m jealous. Happy now?”

“Come on, think about it,” Adrian said impatiently. “Why does a shifter who doesn’t even exist keep occupying Ms. Crawford’s mind and showing up in her dreams every night? The reason Ms. Crawford won’t mate with us has to be because of him!”
That line piqued Evan’s and Rokky’s curiosity.
The four of them had reached a consensus. This was worth hearing out.
The four males formed a circle.
Adrian squatted on the ground, propping his chin on his hands, his round tail and rabbit ears twitching slightly.
Evan couldn’t squat yet, so he sat cross-legged instead.
Hudson knelt on one knee. Rokky sat with his arms wrapped around his knees.
Adrian spoke again. “Let’s piece together what we know. Ms. Crawford touched my rabbit tail fur while talking in her sleep. She said my fur wasn’t as smooth as her Snowball’s.”
Evan followed up, “We can pretty much confirm that Snowball was a canine-type shifter. The little fox is also canine-type. They share a lot of traits.”
“Exactly!” Adrian jumped in. “Annelise even reached out in her sleep to pat the little fox’s head and called him Snowball. So shouldn’t we find that Snowball and bring him back? Then Ms. Crawford would be willing to mate with us. We need to search every canine shifter in the entire tribe.”
He rattled on quickly. He didn’t want to miss the upcoming mating season and lose his chance to mate with Annelise.
Each race only had a few mating windows a year. Miss one, and they had to wait another six months.
Then Rokky spoke, and Adrian’s mood dropped straight to the bottom.
“Ms. Crawford said… her Snowball can’t come back. He’s dead.”
“What?”
Evan immediately clapped a hand over Adrian’s mouth and raised a finger. “Quiet. Don’t wake Ms. Crawford.”
