“It’s not good or bad for me,” Holly said honestly. “It has nothing to do with my own interests. You cured my father, and now his leg is strong enough for hunting again. You helped my family, so I feel like I should help you too.”
“All right,” Annelise said.
Adrian and the other three mates followed along as well.
Before anything about mating could even be discussed, Annelise’s safety came first.
Before long, at the tribe’s entrance, where a crowd had gathered, she saw him. A beautiful young man with silver-white hair staggered unsteadily on his feet.
His clothes were torn by branches, streaked with dried blood.
He was painfully thin, little more than skin and bones.
No female or male dared to approach him.
After all, none of them had ever seen a male shifter who had fallen to his death months ago return alive.
“Has Elder Clariona arrived yet?”
“Someone’s gone to call her, but I really hope the shaman gets here first. This is clearly a monster. Even more terrifying than Rokky.”
“Exactly. At least Rokky is alive. This one is obviously dead. Look at his right wrist-it’s completely bent the wrong way.”
The silver-haired youth was undeniably handsome, but Annelise didn’t recognize him at all.
“I’ve never seen him…”
At that moment, the young man muttered again. His nose wrinkled as he kept sniffing the air. “Mmm… I smell hooman… Annelise… Annelise… I need to find Annelise…”
Suddenly, the silver-haired youth locked eyes with a nearby female and asked urgently, “Do you know Annelise? I’m looking for her. I need to see her!”
The female screamed and stumbled back. “Aah! A corpse! It’s a corpse!”

Holly tugged on Annelise’s sleeve. “You heard him, right? Isn’t he calling your name?”
Annelise stepped forward without hesitation, pushing through the crowd.
Holly froze. “Hey-are you really just going over there like that?”

He’s looking for me, Annelise thought. If I don’t go ask him directly, that wouldn’t be like me at all.
When she stopped in front of him, the silver-haired youth slowly lifted his head. His face was dirty, but it was obvious he had once been well cared for in Elder Clariona’s household.
No male shifter in the tribe wore stone ornaments on their head and neck, yet he wore them
all.
“Hooman…”
“Huh? Wait-who are you?”
Calling her that right away?
In this shifter world, bonded males called their female a matriarch. Unbonded ones used her name directly.
Tears spilled from the young man’s eyes. “Hooman, I finally found you… Hooman, it’s me. It’s me!”
As he spoke, he leaned in and began sniffing Annelise’s scent-again and again, until he reached the hollow of her neck.
“This is the smell,” he said softly. “It’s this smell. I’m Snowball.”
The world seemed to stop.
Annelise’s eyes flew wide
flew wide open. “S-Snowball…”
Of the four mates who had followed her, three were visibly stunned.
The only one who wasn’t surprised at all was Rokky, whose shattered, distant calm only deepened.
Annelise couldn’t believe it. She couldn’t even understand it.
She was in a different body now, so how could he still recognize her scent?
The youth was about the same height as Annelise, looking no older than eighteen or nineteen.

Seeing her disbelief, he pouted, his voice trembling.

“Hooman… scent… the scent of the soul doesn’t change. I’m Snowball. I really am Snowball. After I got sick and died, my soul never left. I stayed by your side, watching you.”
He said she cried constantly, that she was in terrible shape, and he couldn’t bear to leave.
No matter how much he called out to her or tried to interact with her, she couldn’t see him or feel him.
Then, he watched her go days without sleep, dazed and weak from low blood sugar, until she fell down the stairs.
He watched the ambulance arrive and take her away.
After that, she never returned to the rental apartment.
“I missed you so much. So much,” he said, sobbing. “But I didn’t know where you went. I prayed to the heavens, just to see you one more time, just to tell you to live well. And then when I opened my eyes… I was somewhere unfamiliar. But I could smell you!”
Annelise stared at him, unable to speak for a long time, because words like ambulance and rental apartment didn’t exist in this world, yet he knew them.
He was Snowball.
He really was.
Still afraid it wasn’t real, Annelise pinched her own cheek and asked shakily, “What did you like to eat the most?”
“Hooman, of course the milk-and-lamb canned food you always bought for me.”
“And what did you like to play with?”
“The shiny yo-yo,”
Annelise asked no more. She pulled him into a tight embrace. “Snowball… you really came to find me. You really did.”
In her heart, she thanked the heavens over and over. She had said before that this world had wide-open land and a free, easy life.
That it would be perfect for Snowball.

And now Snowball had appeared. The young man sucked in a sharp breath. “It hurts, it hurts… Hooman, my hand is still broken.”
“I’ll heal you,” Annelise said immediately.
What she felt for Snowball wasn’t romantic at all.
It was the pure, aching affection of family.
