Chapter 40 A Name That Refused to Die
Adrian coughed lightly. “Wait-dead? Ms. Crawford told you
that?”

Rokky nodded.
“One time, Ms. Crawford woke up crying from a dream. I asked if there was anything I could do. She said no. Even if she went looking, Snowball was already dead. He wouldn’t come back.”
Adrian’s worst fear had come true.
“So we’re competing with a dead shifter?” he said weakly. “Does that mean we’ll never be able to mate with Ms. Crawford in this lifetime?”
Rokky kept his head lowered and said nothing.
But Evan and Adrian both understood how serious this was.
“If a female doesn’t mate with a male after the age of twenty-five, her spirit energy will slowly wither,” Evan said grimly. “It’s not just us males who’ll go mad. The female herself will lose years of her life.”
Adrian let out a long sigh. “I finally found a matriarch, and there’s still a dead guy living in her heart. Little fox, why can’t you replace that dead shifter? You’re canine-type too!”
“I… I…”
Hudson was more heartbroken than anyone.
All this talk made it clear-what Annelise wanted wasn’t to give him a home.
It was probably to give Snowball one.
He was just another canine-type shifter, nothing more.
If he weren’t a fox, Annelise might not have kept him at all.
“I don’t know,” Hudson said at last, after a long silence.
At that moment, a rooster crowed, and dawn broke.
Someone banged on the courtyard gate.
“Hey! Call Annelise! Call Annelise!”
Evan stood up first and asked through the gate, “Why are you looking for Ms. Crawford? And you shouldn’t even be coming from the eastern side. This isn’t somewhere the esteemed

“Something happened!” Holly cried. “Elder Clariona’s son fell off a cliff and died months ago. But early this morning, he limped back on his own two legs, calling Annelise’s name!”
“W-What?”
It was another morning of Annelise jolting upright.
“Why is everyone shouting this early?” she complained. “I was just about to sleep in for once. Every time someone yells, it turns into a chain of disasters. I can never enjoy a peaceful daily life.”
Grumbling, Annelise got out of bed and saw all four of her mates standing in the courtyard.
She frowned. “What are you four whispering about? Holly, why are you here? Did Clara send you to mess with me again? Or did the saintess selection start already?”
“No, no, neither,” Holly said quickly. “The saintess selection is still half a month away. They’re still preparing. It’s Elder Clariona’s son. He’s been dead for months, but he came back and kept calling your name. A lot of people are heading over there now. The shaman went too. They say they’re going to drive out evil spirits.”
“Wait…” Annelise scratched her head. “Why would he call my name? I don’t even know him.”
She wondered if this was more bad karma left behind by the original owner of the body.
But after searching through those memories, she found nothing.
The original Annelise had never interacted with people from the eastern part of the tribe.
She wasn’t even on their radar. They’d looked down on her.
Holly grabbed Annelise’s hand and started pulling her along. “Let’s go take a look. I’m not afraid of anything else. I’m just scared Clara came up with another way to hurt you, to stop you from joining the saintess selection.”
Annelise snorted. For someone so easily swayed, Holly was actually pretty kind.
“But…” Annelise asked as she was dragged along, “what do you get out of me joining the saintess selection?”
