Adrian kept ranting. “Little fox didn’t get to go today. It’s my turn tomorrow, and I bet she won’t let me in either. Then it’ll be your turn, and I swear she still won’t let it happen. You really think I’m just being dramatic?”

Rokky had his head down. Just seeing him like that ticked Adrian off.

Rokky opened his mouth just a little. “There’s nothing to say… If she doesn’t want someone in her bed, that’s her choice.

“I’m just worried she might kick the blankets off tonight. Especially with it getting cold out.”

Rokky clammed up. Not a word came out.

His cheeks were a little red. But in the dark, you couldn’t really tell.

Evan stepped between them. “Cut it out. Both of you. Adrian, stop freaking out. It’s not even your night with her. Save your tantrum until it is.”

Adrian scoffed.

“I’m just thinking about all of us.”

Evan didn’t even argue. He shoved Adrian toward the cabin and threw him in with Rokky.

Rokky followed the plan like always. Big guy, quiet, never made a fuss.

Adrian looked like he just swallowed a lemon. “Why do I have to bunk with him? Evan, come on, can I just stay with you? He… he creeps me out…”

Turns out, every time Adrian had to share a room with Rokky before, someone else had been there too.

Sometimes it was Hudson. Sometimes it was Evan. But never just the two of them.

Once they’d split into two cabins, Adrian stuck with Hudson, whispering all night.

Now? It was just him and Rokky. And that had never happened.

Evan gave

him a look. “Should’ve kept your mouth shut. Now you’re scared?”

He didn’t cut him any slack.

Adrian ran his mouth like it was a sport. Back when Evan hadn’t been that close to Anneliese, he hadn’t paid much attention to what Adrian was up to.

But ever since he became her real mate, he’d been watching that rabbit nonstop.

He was jealous of everything and everyone,

“I’m staying with little fox tonight. Figure it out yourself.”

Evan didn’t even glance back. He walked over to where Hudson was crouched by a tree and dropped into a squat beside him.

Hudson looked up right away. “Evan, your leg’s still messed up. Don’t squat like that.”

“I’m doing better. Don’t worry about me. Worry about yourself. And don’t let that rabbit get in your head.”

Hudson’s tail gave two lazy swings. That was it. Like he was just going through the motions.

“Evan… do you think red foxes are weird? I mean, I’m the only red-furred one in the tribe. They say it’s been hundreds of years since the last one.

His pretty face twisted into something fragile, like he was about to cry.

Evan patted his shoulder. “Stop overthinking. We’ve known each other forever. Got smacked around by the old Ms. Crawford together too. If something’s eating at you, talk to me. Don’t keep it in.”

Hudson shook his head again. “It’s not a big deal. I just think… you were right.

Evan tried to say more, but Hudson stood up and said he was going to bed.

Evan couldn’t tell anyone else the truth. Anneliese wasn’t the same woman anymore.

She’d only come clean to him. Nobody else had a clue.

The next day passed without anything special.

But when night hit, Adrian cracked.

He muttered while crouching by a tree. His fluffy tail stuck out behind him and twitched.
