Chapter 46 In Heat

Evan let out a sharp sigh. “Then what the hell are you standing out here for?

“Get your *ss back inside and take care of it!

“You keep leaking scent like that, you’re gonna get the rest of us all riled up.”

Adrian stomped his foot, clearly annoyed.

Sweat trickled down his nose.

“I swear, I wanna storm into her cabin and make her smell me. Maybe then she’d quit thinking about that Snowball guy.”

Evan raised a brow. “You really think that’ll work?”

A big part of it was mate jealousy. Every single one of them, except that poor was dying to be the first one to screw Anneliese.

b*stard Rokky,

The only reason things hadn’t gone to hell yet was because Evan and Hudson had history.

And, more importantly, no one had actually slept with her yet.

Adrian swallowed hard. His guilt was obvious.

He wanted it bad. But he didn’t have the guts to go through with it.

He might’ve been strong for a herbivore, but that beast tharok was a whole different level.

Evan muttered, “Just go back inside. Grab a pillow and take care of yourself.

“If you barge into her room and she tells you to wait till morning, you’re gonna blow your load before you hit the floor.”

Adrian bit his lip. His thighs tensed together as he stiffly walked off toward the male shifters’ quarters.

No one else was there. He shut the door.

A few minutes later, some muffled sounds echoed from the room.

Evan flared his nose at the air and muttered, “Figures. Rabbits get worked up faster than anyone.”

After a bit, Evan walked over and knocked on Adrian’s window.

“You good now?

“I need to crack it open before the whole place starts smelling like heat. No one’s gonna sleep in that stink.”

A hoarse voice called back, “Yeah… I’m good…”

As soon as Evan opened the window, a thick, grassy scent poured out, heavy with need.

Adrian was lying face-down on the bed, shirt half-off, a thin layer of sweat across his back.

The other mates were already struggling to keep it together.

But Anneliese didn’t have a clue.

Part of her was freaking out over Snowball.

She just hoped he didn’t screw up or get grabbed by that d*mn shaman.

The other part of her felt awful thinking she might’ve been keeping everyone up with her late nights.

They still had chickens to feed, weeds to pull, game to hunt.

Everything had to be ready before winter hit.

She never made them do the heavy lifting. She only handled the research on wild crop planting. If they didn’t get rest on top of all that, someone was bound to get sick.

None of the mates even realized how thoughtful she really was.

The next morning, Anneliese finally got up. The second she stepped outside, Hudson handed her a roasted chicken.

“Ms. Crawford, I cooked it like we do with the grilled veggies. Try it!”

It was already late.

Anneliese had stayed up all night. She thought she’d be more wired, but she ended up crashing hard and sleeping in.

She ate a few bites, just enough to settle her stomach, then said, “I’m gonna go find Snowball.”

Everyone working in the yard stopped what they were doing. All the mates froze.

Anneliese added, “You guys keep going. I’ll be back real soon.”

Adrian blurted, “Didn’t you say you were gonna wait three days before checking on him?”

Anneliese replied quickly, “I counted the day he arrived as Day One. So today’s Day Three.”

That only made Adrian more pissed.

“I’m not trying to start anything. I just need to know Snowball’s okay. Once things settle down, I’ll introduce him to you guys. He’s basically like a little brother to me.”

Then she bolted.

She hadn’t moved that fast even when the tribe handed out rations.

Adrian frowned. “What brother? I’m from another tribe and even I know she doesn’t have siblings. Girl was dropped off like a mystery egg.”

He followed right after her. He needed to see that white-haired guy with his own eyes.

“You guys coming?”

Evan waved him on, then turned to Rokky. “Let’s take the back trail. I wanna see what’s really going on.”

Hudson didn’t move. He gripped both sides of a giant wooden tub, saying he was prepping lunch for Anneliese.

But only he knew he was squeezing that wood so hard, it was about to crack.

Before long, Anneliese reached Clariona’s place.

It wasn’t hard to find. There weren’t many homes on the east side. As soon as she got close, she spotted a silver-haired boy sitting on a stool, soaking up the morning sun.

His eyes were closed. The breeze lifted his hair, making the stone bell on his left ear chime.

The sound was crisp and soft.

Unlike real bells, this one was carved from stone. Its edges were rough, but there was something beautiful about it.

Suddenly, Snowball lowered his head, opened his eyes, and looked straight at her. “Hoo—”

He stopped himself, then smiled bright like the sun.

“Sis!”

Anneliese felt the weight in her chest disappear.

She had been scared he got taken. Maybe even hurt.

Now that she saw him safe and sound, her steps felt lighter.

“Good. Call me your sister. Call me Anneliese. That’s exactly what I am.”
