Then he looked down between his legs.

Evan glanced at Hudson.

Anneliese waved a hand. “Snowball-ugh, I mean Hudson. I was thinking about him all day, and my mouth slipped.

“Anyway, I lost track of whose night it was. Let’s restart. Evan, you’re with me tonight.

“Hudson, you’re tomorrow. Rokky, the night after that. As for Adrian? He can rot. I don’t even want to see him until after the saintess selection.”

Now that Snowball was safe, Anneliese was free to enjoy her soft boys again.

And she was dying to snuggle something fluffy.

Evan grinned and gave a quick nod.

As Hudson turned to leave, Evan gave his shoulder a firm pat and leaned close. “Feeling better now?”

Hudson nodded once.

But as soon as he stepped outside, the smile dropped from his face.

“Ms. Crawford… still thinks I’m just Snowball.”

His whisper hung in the air.

A faint black mist curled off his back.

A few days later, the saintess selection finally began.

It was the first month of winter, but it wasn’t freezing yet.

The sun shone bright. The breeze felt clean and fresh.

Anneliese and Rokky stood at the edge of the woods, in a clearing just like the others. Anneliese stood tall like every other female preparing for the trial.
