“Cough, cough… some moldy old blanket this is! Oh my god, I’m going to choke-does nobody ever air this thing out?!” She sat up abruptly. Pain spiked at her temple, and when she reached up, she found her head wrapped in layers of cloth. “Ow… It’s been bandaged!”

She quickly looked around for whoever had covered her. The man was crouched beside her, knees hugged to his chest-and impossible to miss.

He had platinum-blond hair, with natural red at the corners of his eyes that swept straight into his temples. His features were gentle and refined, the kind of handsome that felt polished and warm, almost gentlemanly. Too gentle, really-so refined it felt slightly out of place among shifters.

Annelise had the strange feeling that this kind of beauty belonged in some other historical novel, looking almost androgynous. But the golden tail behind him instantly shattered that illusion-and with it, her hope that she’d travelled to a new dimension.

“Oh-I’m still alive!”

The blond-haired shifter nodded and tugged the blanket higher around her. “You have a head injury. I wouldn’t move around if I were you. There’s heavy snow and rain outside tonight anyway. Stay wrapped up and rest a bit longer.”

“No-wait. Who are you? And where am I? I fell from up there. Shouldn’t I have hit the ground and been smashed to pieces?”

The golden tail behind him swayed slightly, and his beast ears that had been drooping suddenly perked up.

“Over 200?!” Annelise sized him up. Even crouching, his long legs were evident. He’s probably over six feet tall. Just looking at his forearms, I can tell he’s strong-no exaggerated muscles, but tightly packed.

“Your matriarch must be over 200 too, right? I’ve only seen shifters who are a little over 100 years old in the tribe. I’ve never met anyone over 200.”

Annelise knew shifters lived long lives. A male’s lifespan, in particular, depended on his matriarch’s-extended by her spirit energy.

However, as she glanced around the space, she noticed that aside from some piles of raw meat, there was no sign that another shifter lived here.
