Chapter 60 One by One, Her Mates Cried Their Eyes Out

Inside, there was only a stone pillow, a narrow mat of woven grass, a single cup, a single wooden bucket-everything existed in ones. Nothing more.

The man with a different hair color smiled faintly. “My matriarch only lived to 100. She died very, very long ago-killed in battle with a ferocious beast while protecting the tribe. Given your age, you probably wouldn’t know her.

“But if I tell you who she was, you might understand-she was the tribe’s very first chief.”

As he spoke, there was unmistakable pride in his voice. He said she had led her people out of a frozen wasteland with no food and no hunting grounds, bringing them here to settle.

It was she who rooted the tribe in this land, mating and integrating with the local shifters to form what the tribe was now. She had also established the rules of the saintess selection, laying the foundation for the tribe’s future development.

Annelise tilted her head as she listened. “Oh… a trailblazing, legendary female. How are you still alive then, sir?”

The blond-haired beauty propped his chin on his hands. “Because I’m the key to selecting saintesses. Before my matriarch died, she infused all of her spirit energy into me. I was her bonded mate. I will choose saintess after saintess, watch the tribe grow, and remain alive until my life finally ends. I couldn’t let everything she worked for vanish in just a few decades or a century, could I?”

At that, he pointed at Annelise, his smile carrying the indulgent satisfaction of an elder, and lightly flicked her nose. “Little one, you are the most suitable saintess candidate the tribe has had in nearly 100 years,”

Only then did Annelise realize-her fall and being caught by him had never been a coincidence. The true condition of the saintess selection was that the Gorehorn would stop rampaging.

That ferocious beast went berserk every few decades. It was normal that the current chief didn’t know this; among several generations of chiefs in between, only one had ever produced a female capable of calming the Gorehorn.

The rest had failed.

So they’d compromised-selecting females who were at least intelligent and paired with strong

mates.

“Even so, the line couldn’t be allowed to break,” the man said calmly. “But this time is different. We finally have another in the tribe who can become a true chief.”

Annelise swallowed hard. I just stabbed its pain point. Even humans or dogs would snap awake if you hit a pain point. That doesn’t mean I should be chief… I really don’t want to be chief.

“Um… Pretty Mister,” she ventured carefully, “could you maybe pretend none of this ever happened?”

“No.” He finally stood up, his tail lifting high behind him and swaying lazily. “Not only can I not do that-it’s my duty to teach you properly, so you can become a qualified chief in the future.”

Annelise desperately wished time could rewind. If she’d known, she would never-never- have gotten curious and studied the Gorehorn’s pressure points.

The man with a different hair color then brought over a basin of raw meat and set it right in front of her. “Here. Eat. Look at how skinny you are-how can you be a proper female like this, let alone a chief?

“I’ll fatten you up, teach you wrestling, teach you how to contend with other females, and what role you should play when hunting ferocious beasts. Oh, right-what’s your true form? We might even be able to roll around together in mud.”

Annelise swallowed again. Roll around in mud, my *ss.

At that, she wrapped herself up in the dust-covered blanket and lay back down, going to sleep again. She didn’t want to think about anything else—she just wanted to recover quickly and go back to tell her mates this utterly unbelievable story.

He poked her cheek with his tail. “Little one, you still haven’t told me your true form. How am I supposed to train you properly without knowing?”

“I don’t know!” Annelise slapped his tail away. “I was an abandoned egg. I hatched on my own. I’m not even 25 yet, so I haven’t manifested a beast form. I don’t know what I am.”

With that, she pulled the blanket over her head. In her mind, she was already planning her

escape.

The first thing she’d do after getting back was hug her mates and give them all a good, thorough cuddle. The second thing-she’d shove Clara’s head straight into a latrine and suffocate her. Mouth open, she’d breathe filth. Mouth closed, she’d suffocate. Either way.

With those thoughts, Annelise fell into a deep sleep again.

When she woke again, a beam of light streamed into the cave-it was daylight, and the man with a different hair color was gone.

She got up and slipped outside, discovering it was already afternoon, the sun sinking toward the horizon.

“This is my chance! If I leave now, I’ll be home by nightfall. Perfect—no one in the tribe will notice.”

She acted immediately and quietly slipped away from the cave.

Along the way, she spotted a couple of fellow tribesmen in the distance and realized two full days had passed. Worse, everyone believed she’d fallen off the cliff and died.

By the time her stomach was growling nonstop, she finally reached home.

She hadn’t even stepped inside yet when she heard crying from within. The loudest voice, without question, belonged to the big fat rabbit.

“Ms. Crawford scared me half to death and then just left me behind! Why am I so unlucky?! If she’s really dead, does that mean our bond’s going to expire soon?!”
