Chapter 62 Apologize
Adrian spoke, and for a moment the firelight threw shadows around him. But with his slow- moving brain, and in this shifter world, he had no clue what a ghost even was.
He spun around and saw Annelise with her hands raised high. At first, he thought it was some kind of savage beast. He let out a terrified scream and tumbled off the little stool. His hands and face took the brunt of the fall.
Then he saw it was Annelise. Without a second thought, he lunged at her, wrapping her pressing her into his chest.

Tears streamed down Adrian’s cheeks and onto Annelise’s neck and cheeks. Even though he was usually a super clean male, he cupped her grimy little face and kissed it. “Ms. Crawford, you’re really okay. You’re not dead… mwah, mwah, mwah… When I thought you were gone, my heart just shattered!”
He held her tight, kissing her so hard it sounded like smacks.
“Ugh!” Annelise sighed.
He’s literally thinking about dying with me. And even when he’s freaked out, he doesn’t say a word. I’m starting to hesitate a little.
But Annelise still said, “Later you need to apologize to Rokky, it’s not his fault. You don’t get it -without him, I’d be dead already. All those injuries on him? He took them for me!”
“I know. It’s not his fault at all,” Adrian said, patting his own mouth. “I just blurted it out in the heat of the moment. I’ll go apologize right now.”
Adrian grabbed Annelise and headed back inside, wiping the tears off his face. “See, everyone, Ms. Crawford’s back. She’s fine!”
But the three people in the room weren’t the least bit surprised.
Adrian glanced down at the wooden pin on Rokky’s chest. Then he stomped his foot and huffed. “Ah… so Ms. Crawford came here first, and then scared me on purpose. Everyone already knew, huh.”
Annelise tugged on Adrian’s hand. “Apologize.”
“Yeah, alright. I’m sorry, Rokky. I know it wasn’t your fault. I just… took my anger out on you,” Adrian said.

But Annelise knew the reason Rokky had coughed up blood was because of his injuries. Plus, he was worried and beating himself up inside. It wasn’t the anger from just now that did it. It wasn’t something that happened all at once.
Evan rolled his eyes at Adrian and pulled Annelise out of his arms, holding her himself this time. He carefully checked her injured head. “Rabbit just can’t see straight. How’s Ms. Crawford fine? Her head’s hurt!”
Adrian tried to grab Annelise back, but he couldn’t reach her.
Ugh, I really want to have Ms. Crawford all to myself, especially right now.
Annelise told everyone not to worry, to give it a day or two, let her tend to the wound on her head. People thought she was dead, but the key thing was that Clara thought she was dead. When the time came, she planned to take Clara completely by surprise.
“Long story, Rokky. Let me ask you-after I fell off that cliff, did that caged savage beast finally quiet down?”
Rokky tried to sit up to answer, but Annelise told him to stay lying down. He was already injured, and the wooden pins used for treatment were still in place.
Rokky nodded. “Ms. Crawford, sweetie, yeah. After you fell, I couldn’t save you. I thought you were gone. Later, I figured I might as well stop fighting. But that savage beast didn’t attack me at all. It just stayed there, lying down like nothing. Then I passed out. When I woke up, I was already being carried back.”
The moment Adrian heard Rokky call Annelise “Ms. Crawford, sweetie,” his anger spiked. His rabbit eyes were red from how mad he was. “There’s a special name now? When did this even happen?”
Annelise turned to him, totally matter-of-fact. “Of course it happened during the trial. Rokky saved me in that little grove, protected me while everyone else hit him. Naturally, I liked him after that. During this trial, he developed feelings for me and used a special name. That’s completely normal.”
“I want one too! I want one too!” Adrian shouted.
Annelise pouted. “I already have special names for you. Plump rabbit, big fuzzy rabbit. There are plenty.”
Adrian was so mad he almost pressed his fingers to his philtrum. No, his rabbit one. “They sound awful. And fine, I can live with that. I love you, after all. But I don’t even get a special name for you.”
