Adrian even covered his face with both hands. He was clearly a lop rabbit, yet both of his ears shot straight up. “Ahhh, I do not want to be this close to twenty-five, and on top of that Ms. Crawford is gone. I am going to lose my mind and die.”
His wailing was cut off when Evan snapped at him. “Stop crying. You are driving everyone crazy. Cry one more time, and I will stuff a cloth in your mouth.”
Adrian immediately shut up.
Hudson had red, watery eyes and squatted off to the side without saying a word.
Rokky, however, staggered out of the room.
Seeing that, Evan hurried over to support him. “You are getting out of bed already. Are you sure you are okay? You were carried back covered in blood.”
“Ugh… this is my fault. I failed to protect Ms. Crawford…” Rokky clenched the doorframe. If he had not lost consciousness back then, he would have wanted to jump off the cliff and go with Annelise.
Evan quickly urged Rokky back into the room to rest. “It is not your fault. In that situation, the ones who were truly useless were us. We could not help at all.”
Adrian immediately snapped back, completely unrestrained. “Who are you calling useless? I am not useless. This was his fault to begin with. It was his fault. He is Rokky. He is supposed to be amazing, and he still could not protect Ms. Crawford. Are you saying people like us were supposed to do it instead?”
Rokky froze the moment he heard that. His complexion went pale in an instant. He dropped his head, and the faint life and expression he had just managed to gather shattered again into that fragile, on-the-verge-of-tears look.
He clutched his chest and coughed a few times. The coughing only got worse, spiraling out of control. His throat felt painfully clogged, like something was stuck there.
Evan hurried over and rubbed his back, trying to steady him. The next second, Rokky tilted his head and spat out a mouthful of blood.
“Hey! What the hell are you….” Evan snapped, whipping around to glare at Adrian.
Adrian shot to his feet in shock and rushed over to support Rokky. “I… I did not mean it. I was just mad for a second. I was not trying to upset you. Why are you coughing up so much

Adrian lifted his hand and froze. It was smeared with blood from where he had touched Rokky’s abdomen. “This… your wound split open?”
Evan was so irritated that he almost slapped Adrian.
Adrian looked like he wanted to find a hole in the ground and dive straight into it headfirst. “This… this has nothing to do with me! I did not cause this injury. It was that imprisoned savage beast during the trial!”
Evan told Adrian to boil water in the back courtyard right away. He stayed with Rokky, helping him up with Hudson, and they hurried to get Rokky back to his room.
Evan had a quiet certainty that Annelise was still alive.
Annelise listened to everything, and her expression darkened just a little.
Rokky’s hurt isn’t life-threatening, but he can’t stop feeling guilty and upset. That d*mn rabbit should’ve kept its mouth shut. Always causing trouble with that mouth. He’s cute, sure, but how’d he end up with such a nasty mouth? Nope, he needs another lesson.
Annelise rushed into the room where Rokky was lying.
The three guys inside all sucked in a sharp breath the moment they saw her.
“Ms…” Before Hudson could say anything, Annelise pressed a hand over his mouth. Then she spun toward Evan and gave a quiet shush.
She looked down at Rokky. His lips were pale and pressed tight, tears streaming down to his ears. She used a wooden pin to stop the bleeding. Then she pointed outside and, mouth moving slowly, spelled it out so that Evan could read her lips. “I’m going to teach that d*mn rabbit a lesson. You guys stay here and take care of Rokky.”
Evan nodded. His eyes glistened, and a little smile tugged at his lips through the tears. He reached out and brushed Annelise’s bandaged head, his gaze full of worry. She had gone through the saintess selection for him, after all.
Annelise turned toward Hudson, wanting to give him a hug. Her arms opened, and she caught the flicker of joy in his eyes, but he didn’t move forward.
His body froze for a beat, then leaned back instead.
“Hmm?” Annelise murmured, puzzled. She couldn’t say much anyway.
