Annelise reached out and poked Adrian on the forehead while he was doing acupuncture, but she shook her head. “Not enough,” she said. “You’re gonna need a few more days of this. And you’ve gotta stop getting so pissed off at yourself. You’re saying, like, every mate wants to copulate, right? But seriously, who actually wants to do it by force like you?”
Evan shrugged. “Little Fox… he used to think he was just a stand-in.”
“A stand-in for who?” she asked.
“For Snowball. Ever since Snowball showed up, Little Fox’s been kinda… off. No, wait. Ever since you sleep-talked and said you liked the white fur, he’s been all messed up.” Evan replied.
Thinking about it…
Evan pointed at Adrian and said, “This is still your fault! You keep saying he is just a replacement for Snowball. No wonder he feels so insecure and thinks Ms. Crawford doesn’t like him at all.”
Annelise shot him a glare. “Who said I don’t like him? He was the first one I ever liked.”
Hudson had been obedient and gentle. He had eight-pack abs and that foxish, mischievous face that completely stole her heart. The best part was that he was the first mate who had ever let her play with his tail. That alone eased a lot of Annelise’s anxiety when she first arrived in this shifter world.
Annelise twisted the needle in her hand so hard it made Adrian yelp. “Ow, ow, ow! Ms. Crawford, what kind of treatment is this? It hurts! Waaa…”
She thought to herself, It’s already good enough that you’re not impotent for life.
“You keep running your mouth to the little fox! You don’t know anything, and you just blab. 1 shouldn’t even have cured you, and I almost could’ve just cut you up and be done with it!”
Annelise remembered how Hudson had grown up as the only red fox in his family, never getting much love or attention. And now with Snowball being a white wolf, he’d completely misunderstood, thinking she liked him.
Even if Annelise explained everything, the others might believe her, but Hudson, starved for care, would never buy it.
Adrian looked hurt. “You were the one talking in your sleep first. That’s what caused the misunderstanding.”

“I was talking in my sleep, sure, but who made it worse by exaggerating?” Annelise snapped, then calmed down. “Let’s just wait. When Hudson gets back, everyone has to lay it all out for him, talk some sense into him. We can’t let him go to extremes. He’s in heat, probably doesn’t want anyone seeing him like that, so he ran off. Everyone has to act like nothing happened.”
But Annelise kept waiting. From afternoon into evening, slept through the night, and waited into the next day. Hudson still wasn’t back.
She couldn’t wait any longer. “I’m going to find him!”
Evan said, “Ms. Crawford, I’ll go
with you.”
“No, there’s a place I have to go, but I’m not sure about it. You guys wait here. Rokky’s hurt, and that rabbit is basically useless. So if the little fox comes back, it’s fine with you here. I can sneak up the mountain on my own. The tribe’s attention is still on the trial up on the back hill anyway.”
Without looking back, Annelise just walked off.
She headed straight to that familiar cave on the mountain. The one the snakes never dared enter, the one surrounded by herbs.
Sure enough, before she even stepped inside, she heard Hudson. His voice was strange, strained, full of pain. “Ugh… it hurts… my stomach… everything hurts… so hot! Somebody… please… help me.”
Hearing him like that, she rushed in and wrapped her arms around him from behind. “Hudson, what’s wrong?”
The moment Annelise touched him, she realized his whole body was burning. A faint black haze seemed to rise off him. “What’s going on? This isn’t normal heat,” she said.
Hudson shivered at her words.
I hear Ms. Crawford’s voice? How… how is that possible…
Hudson turned around and really saw Annelise. But it didn’t feel real. It felt like his own misery had conjured a hallucination.
“Ms. Crawford, please don’t abandon me. I have no home. If you don’t want me, I have nowhere to go… Ms. Crawford, I just want to be myself, not… not a replacement. I know white fur looks nice. All the foxes in the tribe have white fur. I’m the only one with red. But I can’t help it. I wish I’d been born white too, loved by dad and mom…” His voice broke, and tears
