By afternoon, Annelise could no longer stay in bed. The soreness and weakness had already faded. As a shifter, her body recovered quickly and was no longer as fragile as before. She got up and stepped outside to breathe in the fresh air.
Hudson had personally brought her lunch and fed her bite by bite. She found it unnecessary. Her limbs were perfectly fine, and the small blue mark on her body caused no discomfort at all. Staying still made no sense.
Snowball stayed close, circling her.
“Snowball, it’s getting late,” Annelise said gently. You’ve been out for a long time. You should go home. I’m really fine.”
She paused, then added, as if remembering something. “Evan is feeding the chickens in the backyard. Take some eggs with you later and give them to Elder Clariona as thanks for what you told me. Adrian is drying wild greens. Take some of those home too.
“As for the beast carcass we found earlier, I plan to make bacon in the next few days. You can take some when it’s ready.”
Annelise truly had more than enough now. She had plenty to eat and wear. The wild greens she had planted were thriving, and the harvest was generous. Hudson had become obsessed with catching live wild chickens, filling the backyard with them. Eggs were collected every day, and skipping them for a single meal meant several could be saved.
“There’s no need for thanks,” Snowball said quickly. “This is what I should do, Anneliese. Even if you gave me nothing, I’d still go through hell and back for you.”
Annelise reached out and pinched his cheek.
Soft and smooth.
“Elder Clariona still needs a little incentive,” she said calmly. “Even someone half-civilized appreciates benefits.”
At that moment, the High Priest stepped out of the room.
With his hands clasped behind his back, he smiled faintly. “You’re a clever one-know exactly how to win people over.”
Annelise scratched her head awkwardly. “It’s nothing like that. Relationships need balance.”
She hesitated, then continued, “Mr. Allen, I still want to say this. I don’t want to be a saintess. My life right now is really good. Becoming a saintess, and possibly even a future chief,

She had joined the saintess selection only to provoke Clara. The two had old grievances. Refusing the title would also reduce the chances of others using it against her. If future conflicts arose, she could always find other ways to annoy Clara.
The High Priest shook his head slightly. “You’re different from everyone else in this tribe.”
Of course I am, Annelise thought. I’m just a normal person, not a half-civilized savage.
His following words made her pause.
“Your mates are all unusual. Your little fox already has two tails and will grow more in the future. Your rabbit has extraordinary strength, and that strength will only increase. There’s also the rare tharok shifter, Rokky. Even your peacock has enhanced abilities, drawing birds to him. None of this is a coincidence.”
“So it’s because…” Annelise started.
“It’s because of you,” he said. “Your spirit energy is changing them and making them stronger. You also draw powerful outliers to your side.”
He went on to explain that although shifter reproduction was easier and males far outnumbered females, conceiving cubs was not guaranteed in a single attempt.
“Some things go beyond coincidence,” he said. “This also has nothing to do with desire. The ability exists regardless. Even if you do nothing, it remains.”
Annelise swallowed.
The High Priest stepped closer and gently patted her head.
Snowball immediately felt displeased. He stepped forward but held his tongue. In his heart, he bristled. No one should be touching her head.
The High Priest remained relaxed. “For the next ten days, focus on nurturing the cub. After that, I’ll teach you some skills.”
“What kind of skills?” Annelise asked.
Snowball spoke up first. “She already knows plenty-medicine, remedies, farming, planting. She doesn’t need anyone to teach her.”
“That may be true,” the High Priest said, “yet she is still physically weak. Her hands lack strength, and her movements are not agile enough. Males handle most hunting, but beasts often target females to cut off a tribe’s future. Conflicts between females also happen. If a female stands alone without her mates, how does she protect herself?”
