“No. Hey, you could go take a walk.”
“I’m not interested.”
“You…”
What a stubborn one.

Every move Snowball made, Adrian noticed. The hand bumps, the wagging tail, even that protective instinct-Adrian saw it all.
He slipped to the back of the house, leaned against the wall, and muttered. “That little wolf talks a good game-says he’s Ms. Crawford’s younger brother. Yeah, right. That’s not what’s in his heart.”
He kicked the wall twice. A pair of drooped ears popped out and flailed wildly.
“You think I don’t know what he’s thinking? I’m her mate. I want to protect her too. Don’t be fooled because I’m a rabbit. I’m strong. I want her to rub my tail. Tch. Only she treats him like a kid.
“He’s bold. His fur’s not even fully grown, and he’s already flirting with her. Males reach adulthood at eighteen, sure, but the right age to find a matriarch is twenty-four or twenty- five.”
He finished venting, then glanced up. The shadow on the wall looked thicker.
A beat later, he realized someone was behind him. He spun around and saw a silver-haired teen, mouth quirked, flicking the stone charm in his hair with one hand.
Eighteen, still growing. Slim waist, not tall, long silver hair with a soft curl at the ends- stunning, almost ethereal. None of that mattered. He was a wolf.
His lips, faintly pink, pressed together in a smile that sent a chill through Adrian.
“Whose fur isn’t fully grown? Want to hop into my stomach and see if mine’s grown?”
“S-Stomach?” Adrian shivered, hands tucked to his chest.
Snowball laughed at him. “What gives you the right to mock me? At least I’m not her mate. You? You’re her mate, and you still haven’t mated with her. Heh. If she and Rokky get closer, you’re out. Want to bet?”
Adrian bit his lip. “So you admit your feelings for her aren’t just sibling love?”

The sky was just darkening.
Annelise didn’t want Snowball heading home too late. She pressed him to go early.
Sometimes she still pictured him as a Samoyed a goofy, sweet lug. What if someone snatches him halfway home?
This time, Snowball obeyed. He carried eggs in one hand, wild greens in the other, grinning. “Okay, Annelise, I’m off. I’ll come see you tomorrow.”
Annelise waved.
That night, everyone silently agreed that Hudson would sleep beside Annelise. His cub would be born soon, so he’d be tending to her for a while.
Adrian felt sour but knew it was a hard rule. He could only swallow it.
Thinking about that annoying Snowball from the afternoon made him restless. He tugged Evan. “Come on, head out with me.”
“Where are you going at this hour?”
“Come pull a few trees with me.”
Evan froze, unsure what to say.
Adrian had shown his strength before, but Evan hadn’t witnessed it fully because of his leg injury. Now, in the woods, Adrian hoisted a whole tree with one hand.
Evan’s jaw dropped. “You’re that strong? And you really don’t eat much?”
“Rude! I didn’t ask to be this strong. Forget me for a second, Evan. You realize we’re both in danger, right?”
Adrian was trying to instill a sense of crisis. Roky might be safe, but the two of them weren’t. They wanted cubs.
“I thought you were the safest. Turns out that little fox is the safest-already has a cub. Do you know how nasty that wolf is? He told me straight he likes Ms. Crawford too.”
