“Good medicine tastes bitter. Remember how you used to hide under the table because it was so awful? After finishing your dose, you’d get a little bit of goat’s milk as a treat. We don’t have goat’s milk here, but once you finish, you’ll get a sweet wild greens cake.”
Annelise pulled a tiny basket of wild greens cakes from behind her like a magic trick and waved it in front of Snowball.

Snowball shook his head with a small smile. “No need. I’ve grown up. I don’t need coaxing. I can drink it like a good boy.”
He tilted his head back and drained the bitter medicinal brew in one gulp, coughing a few
times.
Wiping his mouth, he said, “No one will suspect a thing. Honestly, more than half of this comes from the original host’s memories. He grew up in the eastern area, so he knows it well.
“The way he fell off that cliff was suspicious. He had been hunting just before the fall. From the scent, the chief must have been very close. She didn’t save him, and there’s a very good chance she watched him go over.”
“So I was one of her targets too. I’ve been back a while, and she hasn’t touched me. That means she’s targeting males across the board?”
Annelise’s brow furrowed. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
If Snowball was a target, living in the eastern area all this time had been extremely risky.
“I’m fine, Annelise,” he said softly.
“That’s not enough. Since you’re recovering, you’re staying here for a few days. If you’re a target too, I can’t slow down. I need to investigate that chief immediately.”
Annelise helped Snowball lie down. He still had a low fever. She tucked him in, but he grabbed her hand. “Annelise, there are only three rooms. Because of Mr. Allen, your mates are already crammed together. If I stay, it’ll be awkward. I should go back. I’m better now. I’ll be fine.”
Annelise tightened her grip. “Snowball, keep this up, and I’ll get mad. Three rooms, huh? Then you bunk with that old geezer. Why should he get his own room just because he thinks he’s my dad?”
She left to make the arrangements. If he stayed, he would share with Snowball. Non- negotiable.

After she left, Snowball stared at the doorway, lips curling. Annelise’s care made every hair stand on end, and his whole body relaxed. Then he glanced at the basket of wild greens cakes by the bed.
His almond-shaped Samoyed eyes narrowed. “Made by that stinky fox. No way I’m eating them.”
At dusk, Adrian heard Snowball was really going to stay for a while and lost his temper. “I don’t agree! No way! He’s Elder Clariona’s son. Why is he living here?”
Annelise looked at the big, pinkwhite rabbit and smiled. “He’s sick. Elder Clariona agreed. We’re not crowding your room. I spoke with Mr. Allen-he and Snowball will share.”
There was one condition-every time she treated anyone-needling or checking herbs-the High Priest had to tag along. His curiosity was endless.
Adrian pressed his lips together and leaned in close to her. His rabbit ears brushed her cheek. His expression said loud and clear-not willing.
Annelise laughed, leaned forward, and bit his cheek.
“Ahwoo.”
His skin was softer than before, probably from the winter and the weaker sunlight. His droopy ears brushed across her face, feeling like sinking into a pile of plush, furred toys- pure bliss.
