Annelise thought for a moment, then said, “Hmm… Let’s just say one day the sky cracked with thunder, a bolt hit me, and suddenly-I could do it.”
The High Priest laughed loudly, clearly unconvinced.
Outside, Adrian was eavesdropping by the wall, so angry that he was chewing on his fingers. That little wolf has a new trick! He’s moving into Ms Crawford’s house already!
Adrian nearly exploded. He slapped the doorframe hard, wincing as pain stung his eyes. No way-this can’t happen!
He sprinted home, grabbed Evan’s hand, and spilled everything he had seen. “We can’t just let him move in like that. If it happens once, it’ll happen again. He moves in, and before long, he might never leave. Ms. Crawford likes him, and he’s the youngest. When mating comes, who knows if it’ll still be our turn?”
Before Evan could respond, Elder Clariona’s mate arrived, carrying Snowball on his back.
“See? I told you,” Adrian said.
Evan stayed quiet, narrowed his eyes, and leaned against a tree, arms crossed.
After Annelise finished needling Snowball and giving him his medicine, he waited until the room was empty. Then he turned his face to the wall and opened his eyes. He had only napped briefly, waking while being carried on Elder Clariona’s mate. Last night, he had stood. outside in the cold, soaked his clothes, and kept them pressed against his skin. That was how he got sick.
He twined a lock of silver-white hair around his long fingers, amber eyes full of anticipation. Bored, he began analyzing Annelise’s four mates
The little fox already had a cub-untouchable. Rokky was recovering from injuries and under investigation by Annelise. Evan was calm and steady, never revealing anything. That left the jealous, hotheaded rabbit-the easiest to manipulate. Dumb, clumsy, sharp-tongued, and through him, Snowball could learn more about Annelise’s peacock shifter mate.
He opened and closed his hands, murmuring, “She has to be mine.”
Footsteps approached-it was Annelise. Snowball slid his hands back under the quilt and shut his eyes, pretending to sleep.
Annelise entered with a bowl of medicinal brew set it by the bed, and nudged his arm with her elbow. “Wake up. Time to take your medicine.”

The tribe was poor-not in food or clothing, but in herbs. Annelise had prepared some medicine for frostbite, antidotes, and blood circulation tonics, but nothing for colds or heat- clearing. She had assumed shifters here didn’t catch colds. She had been wrong.
After an afternoon experimenting with the plants, she found a tiny shoot barely surviving the snow and brewed it into a medicinal brew.
Snowball opened his eyes slowly. His already fair face was pale, his lips cracked and dry. His fever had dropped, but he remained weak.
He rolled over, pressing his forehead to Annelise’s arm. “Anneliese, I feel like I turned back into that little dog. I can’t stop rubbing against your hand. It’s so warm.”
Annelise smiled and stroked his head. “Come on drink your medicine.”
Snowball still didn’t sit up. He patted his cheek, then spoke more seriously. “Anneliese, I checked yesterday. In the past thirty years, four male shifters were sacrificed in this tribe.”
Annelise raised a brow. Given the chief and shaman, that number wasn’t as high as she expected.
Snowball continued, “But the chief, citing various reasons, drove out or sent away nineteen male shifters. That doesn’t include those who disappeared into the deep mountains. Altogether, almost thirty.”
