“Seriously, Adrian! Do you realize how strong you are? Look at what you did! Keep this up, and I’ll have to postpone your treatment.”

Even without delaying it, Annelise knew Adrian temper would have him stewing until he exploded again.

Adrian frowned, dropped his head, and pouted.

“You don’t believe me? He came up behind me that day and made it clear he liked you.”

“Enough! How many times do I have to explain

Annelise’s voice grew firm. Snowball, meanwhile, looked awkward-but inwardly, he was grinning from ear to ear.

Adrian’s rabbit ears, which had been bristling, drooped, almost covering his face. Hurt and defiance showed in his expression.

Annelise felt no sympathy. “I’ve explained countless times, and you won’t listen. You even blew it up so big the little fox almost lost it. Now the little fox is fine, and you’re the one throwing a fit!”

Adrian opened his mouth, but no words came out.

Snowball gently tugged Annelise’s hand. “Annelise, don’t blame him. He probably just misunderstood. I am taking up space here anyway. Maybe I should go back.”

He swung his legs off the bed, but Annelise pressed him down.

“Why is it that the one who messes up never admits it, while the one who didn’t has to give ground?”

She was already on edge. Cadogo had been a target, and she couldn’t risk sending him back. She also couldn’t explain the situation to Adrian Any hint, and the news would spread too

fast.

This time, she scolded Adrian firmly and told him to go back to his room and sleep.

Evan tugged Adrian’s hand. “You really should head back.”

“I…” Adrian opened his mouth again, but nothing came out.

He kicked the wall in frustration and was finally shoved out by Evan.

Evan added, “Ms. Crawford, I’ll talk him down. You’re in a delicate state-don’t get worked

up.”

Annelise remembered she was carrying a cub. Only three days had passed-seven more to

“Stress is bad for the cub. The gestation’s short enough as it is. I can’t let it feel my anxiety these next few days, or its development might suffer.”

She lightly patted her flat belly.

Snowball looked guilty and anxious. “Annelise, I’m really sorry. If I’d known, I would’ve shut the window last night.”

“It’s not your fault. He gets jealous over the smallest things. That rabbit’s temper and jealousy are off the charts. Even before you came, he’d get mad at Evan one moment and at Rokky the next. I even tried scaring him like a ghost, and it didn’t change a thing.”

Annelise patted Snowball’s hand again. “Just stay here and relax. If that chief still targets you, she might strike again or send someone. Staying with me, we can react immediately.”

She said this openly, with the High Priest leaning against the doorframe, swishing his little lion tail and watching the show. One act after another.

He had already heard Annelise lay out the chiefs history-from thirty years ago, the male shifter sacrifices, to exiling males from the tribe and everything in between.

He said nothing, only occasionally grunting “M” to show he was listening.

Annelise never planned to make the High Priest take sides or lend his authority. Living here, he simply needed to know what she was doing. That way, if the day came, she cracked the chief over the head with a brick, he wouldn’t rush in babbling like some saint-or a saintly

man.

The night finally calmed.

By the sixth day, Snowball’s fever was gone.

Adrian was still sulking. He didn’t speak, refused to eat with Annelise, and avoided her gaze. When their eyes met, he huffed and turned away.
