“By then, everyone-especially Ms. Crawford-nows I’m not lying. It’s the little wolf who’s playing games.”

That night, Adrian devised a thorough plan. He considered using his natural strength-after all, even a wolf shouldn’t be able to resist him.

He would corner Snowball, put on a vicious expression, and if Snowball didn’t tell the truth, he’d lift him like a tree, roots and all. That would make the truth clear to everyone.

He drew inspiration from Annelise. She had scared Clara with a juuki to get her to confess. He felt a surge of confidence-this plan was bound to work.

At dawn, Snowball stepped out of his room, streched, and before he could react, a blur of pink-and-white dragged him aside and pinned im against the wall.

Adrian had stayed up all night practicing his meanest expression. He even slammed a fist into the wall beside Snowball’s face, leaving a crack.

“You! Little wolf, if you don’t tell the truth… See this wall? I’ll make you just like it!”

Adrian deliberately lifted his chin and glared downward, wearing a look of contempt. He felt it made him look fierce enough-but just to be sure, he went over to the water trough and checked his reflection.

Snowball just gave him a flat look and muttered “Idiot.”

“You…” Adrian pressed his knuckles to Snowball’s jaw. “I’m serious. You’re going to tell the truth-how you framed me and what you were scheming. Or else…”

He hefted a rock as big as a water trough and smashed it to gravel in front of Snowball.

“Or else you’ll end up like this rock!”

The crash drew everyone over.

Annelise stormed in, ready to scold.

“What now? Can you stop making a mess every other day?”

Snowball gave Adrian a provocative grin, but in an instant, his handsome teen face twisted with confusion, fear, and a timid flinch. His eyes glistened.

“Adrian, even if you scare me like this, I can’t lie about something that never happened. You want me to tell Annelise I wanted to be her mate-I can’t. And you’re so strong. I’ve never seen a rabbit shifter with strength like that.”

Annelise noticed the cracks in the wall, then the shattered rock on the ground. Rage flared.

“Adrian!”

Adrian flinched. His plan hadn’t worked. Why is it like when Ms. Crawford uses the juuki on Clara?

Annelise shook her head at his stubbornness. She called on spirit energy for the first-and only-time to suppress him. She kept it minimal, just a flicker.

The jolt shot through Adrian like electricity under his skin. He knew Annelise had held back. The discomfort lasted only a moment. If she unleashed full power, he probably couldn’t have stayed standing.

Back in his tribe, he had seen mates punished by females-kneeling, drenched in cold sweat, shaking, screaming for forgiveness.

If Adrian had truly done wrong, he would have begged too. He hadn’t.

“Ms. Crawford, I was set up. Yes, I scared him, but only to get him to tell the truth about that day. He was behind me, acting like he wanted to be your mate, and that gave me the wrong idea. That’s why I kept an eye on him and couldn’t stand him. If he wanted to compete, fine -let him compete. But he lied!”

Annelise was furious.

“I don’t care about the others, but you should trust me. I said there’s nothing between Snowball and me-why don’t you believe me? Do you like Snowball, or do you like me? If it’s me, then all you have to do is trust me!

“You keep doing this over and over. At its core, i’s that you don’t trust me! After all this time together, haven’t we built any trust at all?”

She turned to Snowball. “Are you hurt?”

Snowball shook his head, lifting a sweat-slicked face. He tried to smile and reassure her. “I’m fine, I… Ugh!”

His body jolted, and he slid down the wall.

Annelise caught him and checked his pulse.
