“No, no! Adrian didn’t even hit me. It’s not his fault,” Snowball insisted, but his brows were already pulled tight. He bit down hard on his lip then let out a sharp, strained cry.
The sound of pain tore through the room like a warning siren.
He clutched his chest tighter, fingertips already nged purple.
His breathing turned heavy and fast, each inhale louder than the last.
Annelise kept calling his name over and over again. “Snowball? Snowball! Don’t be scared! Don’t panic! This time we can treat it! You’re not dying in your sleep again!”
Snowball kept his lip between his teeth and looked up. His eyes were brimming, just waiting to spill over.
“Annelise, I’m scared…”
Her heart lurched.
Because last time, he hadn’t even been awake. A sudden heart problem. No warning. No time. Just gone.
She hadn’t even been home then.
But now, things were different. Snowball had a human form now. He could talk.
“I promise you’re gonna be fine. Just relax.” She pressed both hands down on two points on his chest and lifted her head toward Evan. “Help me get him inside. Now.”
She needed to needle him immediately.
Evan moved fast. “Your room, Ms. Crawford. It’s got the space you need.”
“Right. My bed’s bigger too. Bring him there.”
Adrian stared at Snowball’s pale face and watched the sweat pour off his forehead. He muttered under his breath, “He’s faking it. He literally smirked at me a second ago. Called me an idiot.”
He yanked at Annelise’s sleeve and leaned in. “I swear, Ms. Crawford! He smiled at me like he won something! Please, you have to believe me!

Annelise shoved him hard without even blinking.
He hit the floor, stunned and flat on his back.

She planted her hand on her hip and glared down at him. “Snowball’s always polite. He wouldn’t do any of that. But you? You really are an idiot.
“Even if he hadn’t called you that, I’d have. If you’re gonna lie, at least make it convincing. Keep pushing, and I’ll dissolve our bond and kick you out!”
A pulse like that didn’t lie.
Snowball was barely hanging on, and this idiot was standing here accusing him.
Adrian stiffened.
Annelise didn’t even glance at him again. She had to stabilize Snowball’s pulse.
During the treatment, sweat dripped down her face. The High Priest watched the entire time eyes wide like he’d never seen anything like it.
Hudson stayed close, gently wiping her forehead and handing her water when she needed it.
Evan looked back at Adrian, who was still frozen like a statue just outside the room. Something about it felt off.
Finally, after what felt like forever, Annelise pulled the last needle out and let out a long breath.
Snowball looked a little better. His color had returned, and the pulse was finally steady.
“You’ve got a heart condition. Why didn’t you say anything? You got lucky it didn’t flare up when you had that fever. If it had, and you were home alone, you could’ve died.”
Snowball blinked, looking guilty. “Annelise, I didn’t know. I really thought it was gone.”
But the truth was, the discomfort started not long after he got here.
His chest had felt tight. His breath, short.
It didn’t slow him down during the day, but at night, the pain was always there.
He knew it. He knew his heart was the problem.
Elder Clariona’s body must’ve been damaged when she was younger. Cadogo’s body came with it-sickly and flawed.

After recovering from the cold, that pressure came back again. It crushed his chest at night.
It felt like a warning sign.
Annelise had tried to check his pulse more than once, but he always dodged her. He’d been waiting for the right moment.
And now it had come.
She reached over and patted his head. “From now on, you’ve gotta be careful. Got it? If anything feels wrong, you come to me.
“You’re lucky. Your heart issue isn’t that bad yet. You’re still young, and your body’s strong otherwise.”
Snowball gave a sweet little nod.
Annelise turned and saw Adrian still standing outside the door.
Her face tightened. She walked out to him. “Do you even realize what you almost did? You could’ve killed him!”
He looked back at the people inside. Then, he dropped his gaze to his own hands.
He was sure that little wolf was laughing at him. Smug and silent.
But saying anything now wouldn’t matter. No one would believe him.
It felt like he was back in that rabbit tribe again the one where he grew up.
