I’ve never felt rage like this before. The white hot fire scalding my veins turns my vision black.
I charge toward the alley, fists clenched, heart in my throat as I look at the bastards who have their hands on my mate.
My drugged mate.
With all of their eyes on me I have the perfect view to watch Hope transform from a sluggish victim to a wildcat.
In one move she twists out of their hold, landing in crouch by their feet. She only takes a moment before she sweeps her leg out, albeit unsteady, taking one of her attackers off their feet.
He cries out and the other two are stuck in between us, recognizing her possible escape yet recognizing me as the threat I am and unwilling to let me out of their sight.
I thought I was going to be saving her.
But she doesn’t need saving.
Not even close.
She slams the second guy into a wall with a strength impressive for her size and finishes him off with a knee to his gut that makes him double over.
“Who the fuck sent you?” she slurs, the anger palpable in her voice. Her body sways, whatever they drugged her with must have not completely metabolized yet.
Still, the fact that she is this coherent is impressive.
My beast growls his approval of her ferocity.
“Speak!” she snarls.
The guy coughs, choking, face pale. “1-1-”
She shoves him down, whirls, grabs the third one by the collar and throws him to the ground like he’s nothing.
The first one stands and tries to run but I intercept him, grabbing him by the throat and dragging him back to her.
“I believe she asked you a question,” I say, slowly.

He scrambles back, shaking, recognition crawling over his face. “We didn’t know she was yours. I swear we would have never taken the job otherwise.”
Beside me I can hear Hope snort.
“Bullshit.” She steps over to him almost stumbling but I wrap and arm around my waist to catch her.
She finally makes eye contact with me, giving me a small nod of thanks I’m sure hurts her pride.
I want to run my hands over her and make sure she’s okay but instead I pull my hand back giving her the space her pheromones are clearly telling me she wants.
Be patient, Emma said.
I can do that.
She digs into the pocket of the second and snatches out a phone.
“Give that back!” he whimpers and I hook him in the temple knocking him unconscious.
Hope looks at me with a raised brow. “Really?”
“What? I just thought it would be easier if we only had to wrangle.”
“Oh, so we’re a we now?” She asks haughtily, turning back to the phone.
I want to remind her she is my mate so we will always be a we from here on out but I reign in the desire and go for another approach.
“I’m here aren’t I?”
“Whatever,” she says but the heat in her voice is gone, replaced by something deeper, something that holds more weight.
She scrolls through the phone.
“No lock screen,” she directs at the third guy who is staring up at us from the ground in horror. “That’s pretty cocky.”
Her fingers fly across the small screen, eye narrowing the longer she’s on it.
Her body stiffens.
“Tyler,” she hisses.
The moment the name leaves her lips, the air shifts.
My beast snarls.

Somewhere in the back of my mind I note that this is the longest time my beast has become
one.
I put that thought to the side as I focus on the more urgent one.
Her step brother did this.
Both conscious thugs freeze.
I push the one in my hand next to the one on the floor.
Fury bleeds into lungs, my molecules and when my voice comes, it’s not mine anymore.
It’s my beast’s.
