Reborn to Dodge the Bad Marriage novel Chapter 100

Chapter 100 Half of Everything

Finished

Constance rushed the rest out. “You’ll be looked after, I promise you. You’d take half of everything, exactly as the law provides.”

Half of what Julian owned came to $10,000,000,000 at the very least.

Constance looked dead serious, close to pleading, and Nora found the whole thing absurd.

Not long ago, Constance had stood behind her without conditions, and now she had crossed over to Olivia’s

side.

She had even gotten as far as asking Nora to divorce him.

The whole thing struck Nora as funny, and the laugh came out before she could stop it.

Being laughed at for her own about-face left Constance red to the ears. “Nora. Can you agree?”

There was more pleading in it than before.

Once the laugh was out, Nora was perfectly calm. “Of course. I married Julian for the money in the first place.”

A year was more than enough time to bring Adrian down.

Hearing her agree took the weight off Constance. “Nora, you’re a good girl, and I won’t leave you short. If it does come to that, you won’t only have half of what Julian has.

“You’ll have half of what I have as well.”

The guilt was genuine, and so was how much she liked Nora.

Some things, though, were out of anybody’s hands.

Nora smiled. “We can sort that out when we get there. I’m full, so I’ll go.”

It never paid to take anyone’s promises too seriously, least of all promises about love and money.

A year was a long time, and people changed.

“Are you going to the office?” Constance asked. “Let the driver take you.”

“No need. I’m going to the courthouse to sit with someone through a divorce, and while I’m there…” Nora smiled at her. “I can get familiar with how it all works.”

On her way out, she glanced at the pot on the table with nothing left in it but spent herbs, and she dropped the idea of having the broth analyzed.

Constance watched her go, heard that last line again in her head, and let out a long sigh.

Nora was angry after all, and Constance couldn’t blame her for it.

Bess didn’t understand. “You could tell her the truth, ma’am. If she knew this came from Dr. Blithe, she

wouldn’t be angry with you.”

came from Cordelia,” Constance said, “but I’m the one who opened my mouth and asked. I had no came choice, and it hurt her all the same. Explaining wouldn’t undo that.

“Don’t bring it up again. I don’t want Julian hearing about it. Knowing him, if he found out I asked her to divorce him, he’d rather die than finish the treatment.”

Nobody knew that grandson of hers better than she did.

They hadn’t been married long, and anyone could see Julian had fallen hard for Nora.

He was the kind of man who went years without feeling anything for anyone, and once he did, that was the only person for the rest of his life.

That left her to play the villain.

She wouldn’t have raised any of it this early either, except that his taste had come back and the treatment was finally working.

Constance sat with it a while longer, sighing, and then she called Cordelia.

“Cordelia,” she said.

Cordelia skipped the pleasantries. “How is your grandson today?”

“His taste has come back and his appetite is much better. That’s down to you and Olivia.”

“Taste returning is a good sign, and the odds of a full recovery are strong. There are three more courses to go, and Olivia will handle all of them.”

Constance laughed, working to please her. “She’s wonderful. I envy you having a granddaughter like that. There was a time when I wanted her to marry Julian.

“If I hadn’t been desperate enough to sit down with a fortune teller who told me Julian had to be married for his health, and if I hadn’t been afraid of tying Olivia to a dying man, she would be married to my grandson right now.

“Now that he has a real chance and years ahead of him, I find myself regretting all of it.

“Thankfully Nora is reasonable. We’ve just agreed that once Julian is well, the two of them will divorce. I only hope Olivia won’t hold his history against him…”

She said all of it like a woman with no ground left to stand on.

Cordelia listened without interrupting, and when she finally spoke she was all fondness. “A grandson-in-law with a divorce behind him isn’t what I’d have chosen. If Olivia wants him, though, she has my full support.

“She’s the only granddaughter I have, and I’m old. There’s no telling how many years I have left, and I won’t have her suffering for anyone.

“Anyone who mistreats my girl will find out what I’ll spend to make it right. My name as a healer, my oath to my patients, whatever is left of my life. Olivia will have justice.”
