Reborn to Dodge the Bad Marriage novel Chapter 200

Chapter 200 Her Baby Boy

Nora’s mouth twitched. “Keep running your mouth and I’ll bring glue next time and seal it shut.”

Ryder laughed, low and filthy. “Why use glue, Nora? You could put your mouth on-

“Ryder!”

Even through a phone, she wanted to put a fist in that mouth of his.

Ryder wasn’t frightened of her, though he did pull it back a little, and the swagger stayed. “Bring the industrial kind, then. Works best and it’s cheap.”

One more second and she would have gone off, so he got to it. “And yes, it’s true. Blake Jessup is sitting here right now, having the time of his life. One hour in and he’s already dropped $10,000,000.”

That was as far as she got before Yvette’s voice came up behind her.

“Nora. Did Julian lose his temper and leave you standing here alone?”

“Later,” Nora said into the phone. She hung up and turned around.

Adrian and Mandy were nowhere in sight, which meant the two of them had gone off somewhere alone.

Nora smiled at her. “I underestimated you. You came prepared, and there’s nothing on you.”

Then, the smile changed. “Of course you did. A mistress doesn’t work her way up to stepmother without a few skills.”

Yvette’s face shifted. With nobody else in the hallway, the good stepmother came off.

Yvette came up close and stood face to face with her, the way a winner stands. “Good, you know where you stand. I beat your mother years ago, and next to her you’re small fry.

“Behave yourself. Be the obedient stepdaughter, leave my daughter alone, and I’ll go on being a good stepmother. Otherwise…”

The smile that came with it wasn’t a pleasant one. “What happened online was just the warm-up. Nobody knows what comes next.”

Then, she straightened up and folded her arms, looking down her nose, waiting for the fear and the begging.

What she got was a small smile and a cool, steady stare.

That rattled Yvette. “What are you smiling at?”

Nora looked back at her, level. “Let me show you somebody. You’ll be smiling too.”

Yvette watched her, wary, with a bad feeling coming on.

Nora took out her phone, opened the video Ryder had sent her, and held it up in front of her. “Look who it is, good stepmother.”

One look and she cried out. “Blake!”

In the video, Blake had been forced down flat across a table, bruises already coming up on his face, an IOU lying beside his head.

Two men held his hand down with the fingers spread out on the wood, and a third one in a suit stood over him with a short kitchen knife.

“$50,000,000. Either you pay today, or it’s $10,000,000 a finger. Pick one.”

Blake was sobbing and begging. “Don’t take my fingers! I’ll pay. My mom has money. My aunt, I mean my aunt has money. Give me an hour and I’ll pay every cent.”

A minute ago Yvette had been strutting. Now, the words came out of her furious. “What did you do to him? Whatever is between us has nothing to do with him. He’s young. He’s a boy.”

Nora laughed at her. “I didn’t do anything to him. He walked in there on his own two feet. And young? Hes in his twenties. What part of him is young, the brain?

“Nobody in that room wants anything except their money. It’s $50,000,000. If he can’t pay in cash, he pays some other way.”

Yvette rounded on her. “Touch one hair on my nephew’s head and I’ll bury you with him.”

“Bury me with him. Listen to yourself.” Nora’s smile sharpened. “He’s only your nephew. Why are you coming apart like this? Unless the mother he mentioned is you.”

Yvette went pale, and her voice climbed. “Don’t talk nonsense. He’s my nephew. He’s my brother’s son, the only boy left in that family. Of course I’m worried about him.

“Tell them to let him go.” She threw a hand at the building around them. “We’re standing inside a police station. I can report you for false imprisonment right now and have you put away for the rest of your life.”

The guilt was all over her face. “I told you,” Nora said. “You’re going to wish you had let the law have you.”

Yvette had more threats ready, and then her phone rang.

She fumbled it out, saw the name, and answered in a panic. “Blake…”
