Geon nodded. “Olivia’s heading out to the mountains tomorrow to run a free clinic, so she asked me to fill in here at the Weston estate for a few days.”
Nora arched a brow. “Olivia’s running a free clinic in the mountains?”
Now, of all times? The timing seemed awfully convenient to her.
“She does it once a year,” Gideon said. “When my mentor’s feeling up to it, she sometimes goes too.”
He glanced at Julian, who’d strolled in after her, then asked Nora, “Would you be interested in coming along Ms. Sinclair?”
The words were barely out of his mouth when Sienna, leaning on the railing upstairs, let out a mocking snort. “Dr. Vance, you think everyone’s like Olivia? You think everybody has some noble calling to save lives?”
She looked down at Nora, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “Some people only know how to land a rich husband, and they’ll do whatever it takes.”
Julian stood beside Nora and looked up at Sienna coldly. “Come down here.”
He didn’t raise his voice, but those three words were ice cold. Sienna shuddered. “Julian, I’m sorry. I… I’m going to bed.”
She fled to her room before she could find out what he’d do to her. Julian’s terrifying!
Julian just watched her go with a cold look and didn’t call her back.
Nora couldn’t be bothered with a brainless little sidekick like Sienna. She turned Gideon down. “Sorry, I’m busy. I don’t have time for a free clinic.”
Gideon meant the invitation sincerely. “You really should go, at least once. You’re interested in medicine, and you’d get a lot of hands-on experience with patients.
“Plus, I think you’d make a great student for my mentor-”
Nora cut him off with a smile. “I’m never going to be Cordelia’s student. Don’t bother trying to talk me into it, Dr. Vance, or I might say something you won’t like.”
Gideon looked like he still wanted to argue, so she said firmly, “If there’s nothing else, Dr. Vance, I’m going to my room.”
She brushed past him and started up the stairs.
Gideon turned and called after her, “I don’t know what your problem is with my mentor, but for Julian’s sake, you should study under her. It’d be good for you, good for Julian, and good for every patient out
there.”
He couldn’t understand why she’d turn down a chance to study under Cordelia. Countless medical prodigies and big names in the field would kill to be her students, even if they only got to sit in on a single lecture.

Yet Nora had said no without a second thought. To Gideon, that was flat-out disrespect. She was arrogant, and she looked down on everyone.
Nova brushed off what he’d said and turned to Julian. “Do you need me to study under Cordelia to cure you?”
Julian met her eyes and answered without a moment’s hesitation, completely serious. “No. Study with whoever you want. Don’t do it for me. Follow your own heart. Don’t make yourself miserable on my
account.”
“Besides…” He paused and looked at her, steady and intent. “I trust your skills as they are right now.”
He believed she could cure him. Maybe she didn’t want to yet, or maybe she just didn’t have enough of the right medicine.
But he couldn’t say that out loud. If the wrong person overheard, they’d think she could save him and was choosing not to, and that wouldn’t do her any good.
Nora was very happy with that answer. She smiled at Gideon. “Hear that?
“I study medicine because I love it, and I save the people I want to save. Not because you guilt-trip me into
it!
“As for Cordelia calling herself the Snowbell Healer, ask her if her conscience is clear.”
Gideon was furious to hear her talk about his mentor like that. “Ms, Sinclair, you’ve always been biased against her! You’re the one who’s full of spite! You owe her an apology!”
Nora didn’t even turn around. “Dr. Vance, you should have Cordelia get your head checked. Maybe you’re just an idiot. Your medical skills are bad, your brain’s worse, and you’re a terrible judge of character.
“But since your mentor only wants you around as a lapdog to do her dirty work, let me write you a prescription.
“Find a few chances to barge into her office unannounced. Or keep your ears open and listen in on her conversations now and then. That might cure you of being such a loyal little lapdog.”
Did she just call me a lapdog? A dumb, blindly loyal one? Gideon fumed.
That stung, but he was even angrier about her smearing his mentor. All he could do was shout after her, “Time will prove you wrong about her!”
Nora just scoffed and didn’t bother answering.
