Reborn to Dodge the Bad Marriage novel Chapter 32

Chapter 32 You Suspect Me

Somewhere in the crowd, another voice picked it up. “So if he goes, who takes over the company**

Mandy had given the day up as a loss, and then that scream from the doorway handed her exactly what she’d been waiting for.

She shot to her feet and joined in. “Somebody call a doctor! Call an ambulance! Every second counts!”

The wedding hadn’t turned into the joke she wanted, but the part that mattered had happened anyway, exactly the way it had the first time around.

He’s down. Nora’s about to be a widow!

Constance looked at her, and her voice came out with ice on it. “Miss Sinclair, this is a family matter, and it’s none of your concern.”

Then, she turned to the room and pulled her calm back on. “Whatever this is, please, sit and eat. I’ll go find out what happened. My grandson is in perfect health. There’s nothing to worry about.”

Constance had handled worse rooms than this one. She looked so composed that half the guests started wondering whether they’d misheard.

The whole room was asking the same thing. Had Julian really coughed up blood?

Holding the room together was costing her everything. There was no strength left in her legs, and only her grip on Bess’s hand kept her upright.

“Where’s Nora?” she asked, low.

“Changing,” Bess said. “She’s probably heard about him by now.”

Constance’s eyes cooled. “Keep her in her room. She doesn’t come out without my say-so.”

The day before, Olivia had said the medicine Nora gave him was poison, and that he wouldn’t see seven in the morning. She’d been a few hours off, and she’d still been right.

Bess hesitated. “Ma’am, you think she…”

The rest of the sentence hung there between them. Bess was asking whether Nora had poisoned him.

Constance didn’t want to believe that, and she cut her off. “Call Olivia. Tell her something’s happened to Julian.”

Constance and Bess got into the elevator.

On the way, Bess got Olivia on the line and told her Julian had collapsed and was bringing up blood.

She had it on speaker.

Olivia turned it down sweetly. “Bess, would you tell Grandma Weston I’m so sorry? I’m not much of a doctor next to Nora. She should be the one treating Julian. I’d only be in the way.”

Chapter 32 You Suspect Me

She hung up and turned to Cordelia, worried. “Grandma, he’s going to be all right, isn’t he?”

didn’t actually want anything to happen to Julian.

Cordelia gave her a look. “Pull yourself together. As long as I’m here, nothing happens to him. All it takes is Nora Sinclair on her knees asking you for help.”

She wanted a look at Nora herself, to find out whether the training was real and whether she carried the blood of a woman Cordelia had known a long time ago.

Eight floors up, none of the noise from the ballroom reached the hallway.

Nora changed and went straight to Julian’s room next door.

Two bodyguards had been posted at the door, and one of them stepped into her path. “Mrs. Weston, please go back to your room.”

Something was wrong. She leaned to see past them as the door swung shut. “Where’s Julian?”

She got one look before it closed. A doctor was inside, and Julian was down on the floor.

Her brows pulled together. “What happened to him?”

Neither of them moved. “Please go back to your room, Mrs. Weston,” the same one said.

“I need to see Julian,” Nora said.

The medicine she’d given him helped him sleep and brought his appetite back. By every rule she knew, he shouldn’t have been on that floor.

She moved for the door anyway, and they closed ranks.

“If you won’t go back on your own, Mrs. Weston, don’t blame us for what comes next.”

He reached for her arm to walk her back himself.

His hand barely got there. Nora caught the wrist, turned her hip into him, and put him over her shoulder onto the carpet.

She started forward again. The second one came at her ready this time, and he didn’t hold anything back.

Nora had picked up hand-to-hand the first time around, after she married Adrian. She’d learned it tor one reason only, so that she could beat him. She’d trained hard since coming back, but her body still wasn’t what it had been.

Two more came around the corner to help, which made it worse.

She knew where the nerves ran, though, and every punch she threw landed on one.

Inside a minute, all four of them were down on the floor.

They dragged themselves back into the doorway anyway. “Madam Weston’s orders. You don’t go in. If you want through that door, you’ll have to kill us first.”
