Chapter 41 He Came Downstairs
not asking for anything.” Olivia said. “I just want him well.”
Finished
Sienna snatched the vial straight out of her hand. “Why does she get to hit you and walk away without so much as an apology?
“If she wants that medicine for Julian, then apology or no apology, she’s taking that slap back.”
Her arm came up and she swung hard at Nora’s face.
This time her hand never landed. A bigger hand closed around her wrist and stopped it dead.
She followed the arm up, saw Julian, and her face changed. “Ju…”
The crack of it cut the word in half.
Julian’s hand had come across her cheek hard enough to snap her head sideways.
His voice was ice. “You just disrespected my wife. No dividend for you this year, and your cards are frozen.”
Sienna didn’t think it was fair, but Julian frightened her a good deal more than the money did. She pushed her lip out and looked at the floor.
“Apologize to Nora,” he said, cold.
Sienna kept her eyes down and forced it out. “Nora, I’m sorry. I was out of line.”
Hattie handed Nora a disinfecting wipe, and Nora took her time cleaning Julian’s hand with it.
She could be gracious too. “It’s fine. Next time, think before you talk and keep your hands to yourself. Having to clean you off him is a nuisance.”
She thinks my hand is dirty. She’s actually disinfecting him. Sienna nearly choked on it.
Olivia looked at Julian standing there in one piece, delighted and thrown at the same time. “Julian, you’re all right?”
Constance came to him and looked him over, beaming. “Julian, look at you. How do you feel?”
He’d changed his clothes. His color still wasn’t good, but next to the version of him that had been bringing up blood by the mouthful an hour ago, he looked almost well.
Mandy stared at him. He was on his feet with actual color in his face. “You’re fine? What? You were supposed to be in an ambulance! You’re supposed to be unconscious, and then they can’t save…”
Constance cut her off cold. “Miss Sinclair. Watch your mouth.”
If Nora hadn’t been standing right there, she’d have had Mandy carried out an hour ago.
Nora slid her a look. “It’s my wedding day. If my own sister can’t manage a congratulations and wants to curse my husband instead, that’s her choice.

“Somebody get Mandy out of my house!”
Where Mandy was concerned, she had no reason to go easy.
Two of the bodyguards were on her at once, one under each arm.
Mandy screamed at them. “Get off me! Nora, I’m your sister, you can’t do this to me!
“I was defending you five minutes ago! Nora… let go, I can walk!”
Finished
The harder she fought, the less careful they got. A third one came over, and between them they carried her out like a piece of furniture and dropped her on the drive outside the wrought-iron gates.
Mandy shouted after them. “My bag! My phone!”
Her bag had come off her shoulder somewhere in the struggle.
One of them picked it up and threw it out after her.
Her phone slid out, hit the paving, and the screen shattered.
She had no phone, no cash, and no car. The estate stretched out in front of her, there was no way to call a ride, and she was walking.
She stamped her foot and screamed back at the house. “Nora, you wait!”
Inside the ballroom, nobody had moved.
Nora let her eyes travel over them, and one corner of her mouth lifted. “You all saw that. I don’t go easy on my own sister.
“So before anyone decides to come at me, think hard about what kind of person I am.”
She’d slapped Olivia Blithe. There wasn’t a soul in that room she wouldn’t hit.
Olivia was still working on Julian. “Julian, are you really all right? Does anything hurt? I’ve been so worried. Let me have a look at you.”
She reached for his wrist to take his pulse.
Her fingers didn’t get within an inch of him.
Nora had her by the wrist, smiling. “Miss Blithe, keep your hands off my husband. I don’t want them anywhere near him.”
Olivia went white and explained in a small voice. “I only wanted to check his pulse. There’s nothing more to it than that, Nora. Please don’t take it the wrong way.”
Nora raised an eyebrow. “He’s in perfect health. He doesn’t need his pulse checked, not by you, not today,
not ever.
“Remember this, Miss Blithe. He’s my husband now, legally. Don’t touch him.”
Olivia turned to Julian, wounded. “Julian, I…”
