Chapter 49 The Snowbell Healer
Constance watched the two of them go back and forth, and the smile that spread over her face was pure relief.
Over breakfast she watched Julian work his way through a crab cake instead of the liquids he’d been living
She asked him, almost hungry for the answer, “What does it taste like?”
“Bitter,” Julian said. “Very bitter.”
Everything used to taste like nothing to him. Now everything tasted bitter, plain water included. The knife-/ in-the-throat feeling had eased off, though, and going down only felt like swallowing crushed glass.
Constance sighed and turned to Nora with real hope in her face. “Nora, how long does he have to take your medicine before his taste comes back completely?”
Nora had a crab cake halfway into the sauce, and she stopped. “Grandma, that’s an appetite remedy. It doesn’t bring anyone’s taste back.
“For that, his body has to heal.”
Constance leaned in further. “Then can you treat him, Nora? Can you make him well?”
Julian didn’t want that weight on her. “She isn’t a licensed physician, Grandma. Don’t put it on her.”
Nora thought about it and looked up at both of them. “There’s one person who can cure him.”
“Who?”
Constance had it out of her mouth before Nora finished.
Even Julian lifted his head.
The weight of both of them looking at her was heavier than she expected, and she took a second. “There’s a healer people call Snowbell. Snowbell can treat him, and more than that, cure him.”
“Snowbell?” Constance’s eyes lit. “There’s really someone like that? You’re certain this person can cure him?”
Nora nodded without a flicker on her face, which was impressive for a healer she’d invented on the spot. “Yes. Snowbell.”
She didn’t actually know much. She’d only heard the name late in that other life, once her grandmother finally started teaching her medicine, because it was written inside one of the books Rosalind gave her then.
She’d asked what Snowbell meant, and her grandmother’s face had gone soft and far away before she answered that it was a person. If Nora had it right, the healer everyone called Snowbell was Rosalind herself.
Constance grabbed her hand. “Where is this person? Take me there now. Whatever the fee is, whatever the conditions are, if it’s in my power the answer is yes.”
Nora talked her down and promised to start looking. Later that morning, she’d barely gotten off a call when

was her bank, telling her a deposit had landed.
She counted the zeros after the five twice, and her eyes went wide. “$50,000,000?”
She fired off a message to Julian. “You just transferred me $50,000,000?”
Julian wrote back, “I did. That’s the daily linit.”
So without a limit he’d have sent more, and there was no telling where he’d have stopped, at $100,000,000 or $200,000,000 or everything he owned.
Nora replied, “Thank you for the education. So the richest man in the country has a daily transfer cap of $50,000,000.”
Back when she was in grade school, trying to earn a little money for her grandmother, she’d fallen for one of those online task scams and lost $3,000. The only reason it stopped there was the $3,000 daily cap on
her card.
Julian answered, “You’re welcome. My money is your money.”
Two minutes later another one came in. “I earn it so my wife can spend it.”
The message made her want to laugh, and it made her want to know what his face had looked like while he typed it.
Was he dead serious, the way he’d look signing off on a merger? Or was he red in the face, red all the way down his neck? Once she had the picture in her head she had to know.
Nora sent back, “They say a man looks his best when he’s working. Send me a picture of you right now.”
She waited after it went, and nothing came back.
The disappointment landed harder than she wanted it to. “I really do keep asking for more.” She’d gotten ahead of herself, and there was no reason on earth for him to send her a photo.
Nora put the phone down and went to interview the agent she wanted for Sabrina.
Exactly one candidate turned up. Nora was short-staffed, so she asked a few professional questions and
hired her.
Once that was done, she introduced the new hire around and walked her through the job.
Only then did she get back to her own desk, and she had her phone out before she’d finished sitting down.
A message from Julian sat in her notifications, sent half an hour earlier, and her whole face changed before she could stop it.
She opened it, and it was a photograph.
In it Julian wore a black suit. Every line of him was hard, from his brows to his jaw, and his expression didn’t invite anybody closer. He looked like something meant to be admired from across a room and never touched.

Enlarged, though, the photo showed red climbing all the way up the side of his neck.
