Chapter 56 A Chair of Her Own
right. There was a fire behind Julian’s eyes, and he watched her go the whole way.
Olivia stood off to the side grinding her teeth.
From where Olivia was standing, Julian watched Nora walk away like a man who couldn’t help himself.
Julian waited until the study door shut behind her before he turned around, and his face gave nothing away. “You wanted something?”
A second earlier he’d been warm. The moment he turned toward Olivia, he was a stranger/
Olivia pressed her lips together. “Yes. I need to run a full workup on you and settle the treatment plan.”
Julian stopped three steps short of her and stayed there. “How confident are you that you can cure me?”
Olivia looked up at him. “If you cooperate with me and nobody interferes, then even if I can’t cure you, another three years isn’t a problem.”
Julian frowned. “Nora won’t interfere.”
The way he took her side made Olivia’s chest burn, and she kept smiling through it. “I didn’t say it was Nora.
“Julian, can you follow my treatment plan all the way through?”
Julian nodded. “Yes.”
Olivia brightened. “Then come with me. We’ll start with a simple intake.”
Nora worked in the study until half past ten, then came out.
The door to the main bedroom stood open on a dark room, so Julian clearly wasn’t in it.
Olivia’s room next door was lit up, and voices were coming out of it.
“How has your appetite been lately, Julian?”
“Better,” Julian said. “I can keep food down now.”
Nora stopped in the doorway and looked in, and there was nothing charged about any of it.
The room had been set up for examinations, with two armchairs and a small square table between them, and books and charts stacked on top of it.
Julian and Olivia sat across from each other at that table.
He answered her questions, and she wrote everything down.
She caught the shadow in the doorway out of the corner of her eye, and then she looked up. “Have you been sexually active recently?”
Julian frowned. “That’s a private question.”

Finished
One breath she was asking about his appetite, and the next she was asking that. She’d done it on purpose.
No let out a scoff before she could stop it.
Julian looked up, saw her in the doorway, and his brows drew into a hard line.
Olivia invited her in without a flicker. “Finished working, Nora? Come and sit in on this, so there’s no misunderstanding about Julian and me.”
“Sure.” Nora walked in just as easily.
Olivia gave her an apologetic look. “I’m sorry, there are only two chairs, and I don’t like people sitting on my bed. Do you mind standing?”
In a hospital this would have been an ordinary intake between a doctor and a patient, and a family member standing through it would have been perfectly normal.
This was the Weston house, though, and Nora was on her feet while Julian and Olivia sat at a little table together.
It made the two of them look like the couple who lived there and Nora look like the help.
“This is my house,” Nora said. “So yes, I do mind.”
Olivia moved to get rid of her. “Then you should…”
Nora called down the hall. “Hattie, bring me a chair.”
She smiled at Olivia, whose face had stopped cooperating. “This house can spare a chair.”
Hattie had one there inside a minute, and Nora set it down right next to Julian and sat close enough to touch his arm.
Nora smiled. “There. Carry on.”
Olivia’s mouth twitched into something like a smile. “Julian, do you want to keep going with the last question?”
Her cheeks went pink while she said it, and her eyes slid sideways to Nora.
That kind of blush was very easy to misread, especially with Julian frowning at Nora like he was deciding whether to answer at all.
Nora looked up at him, perfectly at ease. “Why are you looking at me? Dr. Blithe asks a question, you answer
“It’s only your sex life. Answer her.”
Julian asked her, “You heard that?”
Nora nodded. “I did.”
He watched her face for anything at all, and there was nothing in it, no anger and no jealousy.

Olivia smiled. “Since Nora doesn’t mind the subject, I won’t be shy about it either.”
She asked him seriously, “Have you been sexually active recently?”
