Chapter 59 Day Three
Juan didn’t look over at her. “You don’t have to run with me.”
Olivia smiled. “Your health is my responsibility. In the shape you’re in, even a walk is a risk without a doctor beside you.
“So I’ll run with you. Even if I can’t keep up, I’ll do what I can. You’re my patient and I’m your doctor, and I don’t walk away from that.”
Julian barely glanced at her. “Suit yourself. Don’t wear Nora’s clothes again.”
“Understood.” Olivia glanced up at the second-floor window where the curtain hadn’t quite closed, let one corner of her mouth lift, and hurried after him.
Nora changed and came downstairs just as the two of them walked back in.
Olivia greeted her, smiling. “Morning, Nora.”
Nora gave her a small nod. “Out for a run?”
Julian thought she was asking him. “Mm.”
Olivia answered too. “I ran with Julian. He’s so fast I couldn’t keep up. Come out with us tomorrow, Nora.”
Nora ignored him and put the question to Olivia. “Was the air nice out there?”
Olivia had no idea where that came from, but she nodded. “It’s lovely in the morning. Very fresh.”
She turned to Julian. “Wasn’t it, Julian?”
Julian hadn’t taken his eyes off Nora, and she hadn’t so much as glanced his way.
His face closed, and the answer came out of him cold. “Mm.”
Olivia looked at Nora, and her smile got wider.
Nora laughed lightly. “With that much artificial sweetener wandering around out there, of course the air was fresh. A little too fresh, actually. Past a certain point it stops being fresh air and starts being a chemical leak.”
“Nora…” Something went out of Olivia’s face.
Nora smiled at her. “What? Miss Blithe, does that sound like somebody you know?”
There was no good answer to give. Taking it personally proved the point, and letting it go proved the point, so Olivia said nothing at all.
The silence put Nora in a good mood. She called across to Constance at the table. “Grandma, I’m heading in
to work.”
Constance called back. “Not even breakfast first?”
“No. And don’t hold dinner for me either. I won’t be back for it.”

“Then wait a minute. Bess, pack Nora a sandwich and some milk and eggs. Make it two sets. Julian, you’re
ing her in.”
There were drivers in the house, but a husband taking his wife to work was an opportunity, and Constance knew it.
Bess put the bag into Julian’s hands. “Go on, take Mrs. Weston in.”
Julian went out and made it to the driveway in time to watch Nora’s red Ferrari tear off and disappear, leaving nothing behind but dust.
Constance saw him come back in still holding the breakfast and glared at him. “What are you doing back here? I told you to drive her!”
Julian dropped the bag in the trash, and there was nothing at all in his voice. “I hadn’t showered or changed.”
Olivia watched him go up the stairs with something coming off him that told the whole house to stay back. and she pressed her lips together to keep the smile down.

At the office, Nora ran into Mandy in the lobby again.
“Morning, Nora.” Mandy greeted her brightly.
Nora didn’t bother looking at her. “Mm.”
Mandy fell into step beside her. “What’s with the face this early? Did you and Julian have a fight?”
Nora’s mood was already bad and she had no interest in playing along. “It’s barely nine and I’ve already picked up a stray. How good a mood would you be in?”
The smile came straight off Mandy’s face.
In the end she swallowed it. She could take it for now.
“Nora, it’s been three days since the wedding. Tonight’s the dinner at Mom and Dad’s.
“Dad wants to know whether you’ll bring Julian home for it.”
Nora’s step hitched. I forgot about the dinner.
Mandy tipped her head at her. “Nora, don’t tell me you really did fight with him. He won’t even come home with you for this?”
It was true that Julian hadn’t been rushed to a hospital. But three days into the marriage, Nora was already fighting with him.
That meant things weren’t going well for her inside the Weston house, and there was nothing sadder than a wife nobody loved.
Mandy wanted to laugh. She wanted to laugh right in her face.

Nora took in how openly pleased she was, and her mouth twisted.
What, does me fighting with Julian make your whole day?”
“Of course not.” Mandy pulled her mouth down, and the corners went right back up.
“It’s written all over you.” Nora rolled her eyes at her. “Your acting is terrible. Don’t do it in front of me. It makes me want to hit somebody.”
