Reborn to Dodge the Bad Marriage novel Chapter 84

Chapter 84 A Generous Offer

Ovia didn’t trust herself to say anything.

She had worked half the evening on that, and now it was going in the trash!

Julian had only left his because Nora wouldn’t touch hers!

The knot in her chest pulled tighter, and she turned to Nora. “What did Madam Weston want with you earlier, Nora? She looked furious.”

Nora looked genuinely puzzled. “Did she? I didn’t get that at all. She only wanted a word about how to be a good Mrs. Weston.”

“Really.” Olivia didn’t believe a word of it.

Nora smiled. “Then go and ask her. She didn’t seem angry to me.”

Nora figured Olivia knew perfectly well what it was about and was only playing dumb.

Olivia would never actually ask Constance. Some things were better kept to herself, and showing too much of her hand would only cost her.

That night, Olivia gave Julian his treatment as usual, with Nora sitting off to the side to watch.

The sequence ran exactly as it had the one night she watched it, and Nora had picked it up then, so she stopped watching and scrolled through her phone instead.

Olivia caught that and laughed at herself inwardly for taking Nora so seriously that first night, for ever imagining she could know the Thirteen Gates.

Nora couldn’t even keep her eyes on the Fivefold Method for one session. The Thirteen Gates were out of the question!

Olivia watched her sitting there bored half to death over that phone, and an idea came to her.

“Nora.” Olivia’s voice came out warm.

Nora glanced up. “What is it? Something wrong with the treatment?”

Olivia shook her head. “No. It’s just that you looked like you really wanted to learn it the night I let you watch. So let me teach you.”

“You’d teach me?” Nora looked at her, taken aback. “You want to be my mentor?”

Nora shook her head before Olivia could answer. “Thanks, but no. I don’t do mentors.”

Olivia’s mouth went thin. “Nora, there are medical students who beg me to take them on, and I’m not looking for an apprentice at the moment.

“So you’re getting ahead of yourself.”

A teacher and a student were one thing. A mentor and an apprentice were something else entirely.

And that last line was a roundabout way of saying Nora had hoped to be her apprentice.

Noa wasn’t anywhere near good enough for that!

“Huh.” Nora sounded entirely unbothered. “And you still want to teach me?”

Olivia gave her a gentle smile. “You won’t be my apprentice, and you won’t be my student either. But I’ll teach you the Fivefold Method myself, for Julian’s sake.

“If something comes up, say the hospital calls me in for emergency surgery, I can’t be here to do the needles. The course breaks, and the results fall off a cliff.

“If you learn it, there’s a backup in the house. It takes some weight off me, and you’d stop misreading me all

the time.”

“Right,” Nora said.

Olivia’s tone turned serious. “I should warn you, it’s difficult and it hurts. First you memorize the pressure point charts. Then you practice on a mannequin. After that you put the needles into your own body. It takes a long time, and none of it is pleasant.”

Nora frowned. “Is that how you learned it?”

Olivia nodded. “It is. That’s how I’ve always done it, and it works.”

She pushed her sleeve up and held her arm out. “Look at this. The marks are still there. Six months of practicing the Fivefold Method on myself.

“I didn’t tell anyone I had a treatment that could hold back Julian’s poison until I could do it perfectly, and I didn’t put a needle in him until then either.”

When she finished, she looked over at Julian, shy and expectant.

I put myself through all of that for him. He has to feel something about it.

He would understand that in the end. She loved him more than Nora did, and she deserved the place Nora was standing in.

But Julian didn’t so much as glance at her.

Nora, on the other hand, did look at the marks on Olivia’s arm, and she clicked her tongue. “If it cost you that much to learn, I’d feel terrible letting you teach me.”

Olivia jumped on it. “There’s nothing to feel terrible about. I have a spare set of silver needles in my kit and a mannequin on the shelf. You’re sitting right here watching anyway, so I’ll talk you through it while I work.”

Nora waved it off. “Better not. I’d hate to embarrass you.”

“You wouldn’t,” Olivia said. “If you don’t pick it up, that’s on my teaching, not on you. And this is for Julian. I’d think his wife would be willing to put up with a little pain for him.”

She was already on her feet, crossing to the shelf for the practice mannequin.
