Chapter 98 The Pink Apron

Na hummed at that, read through the pages once more without finding anything, and yawned. “It’s late. Time to sleep.”

She started to get up, and Julian pulled her back down into his lap, where she felt exactly what was pressing against her. Her face went scarlet. “You… you…”

“Mrs. Weston.” Julian spoke against her ear. “I found all of that for you. Don’t I get something for it?”

Embarrassment had her trying to stand again. “You said it yourself. You’re my husband. Doing things for me is the job.”

“It is. Which is why I want a reward.”

His rough fingers wandered along her waist, tracing the skin there through her clothes.

Everywhere he touched went hot, and for the first time in two lifetimes she wanted a man. Hunger was human, and so was this.

Nora turned her head and kissed him fast on the cheek. “There’s your reward. Bed.”

Julian still didn’t let go. “Mrs. Weston, you’re sitting in your husband’s lap and that’s all the reaction I get?”

His voice dropped low and rough, and it did exactly what he meant it to do.

What was pressing into her only got harder to ignore, and the heat of it went straight through her.

She looked at him. “You’re supposed to be off this kind of thing while you’re…”

She never finished, because Julian caught the back of her head and kissed her.

Sitting on his lap, afraid of sliding off, she reached up and locked her arms around his neck.

That small movement bought her a longer and far more serious kiss.

He kept at it until she couldn’t breathe, and until the hard length of him against her was impossible to miss.

Light-headed, Nora finally shoved him off and glared. “Try anything else and I’ll put a needle in you that keeps you soft for a month.”

Julian took in the scolding on her face, held her tighter, and buried his face against her shoulder.

“Nora.” He said her name like it mattered.

She answered him the same way. “Julian. I’m right here.”

The arm around her waist tightened. “I want to live. More every day.”

She was the reason he had started fearing death and started wanting to stay.

That stopped her for a second, and then she laced her fingers through his. “So do I.”

She slept through the night without dreaming, and by the time she woke, Julian was already up and gone.

Nora raised her brows at that. She brushed her teeth, washed her face, changed, and got as far as the second floor landing before she saw what was happening in the dining room.

Julian sat there in a white shirt, cool and expensive-looking, making breakfast look like a magazine spread

Olivia sat across from him in a pink apron, ladling broth into a bowl and setting it down in front of him.

She watched him with a soft, happy look on her face. “Try it. I got up at five and it’s been going ever since.”

Constance beamed at the pair of them. “Go on, Julian. Don’t you dare say it’s bad and break Olivia’s heard

Julian picked up his spoon. “All right.”

From the landing, the whole warm scene looked like a family at breakfast.

Julian was the husband about to leave for the office, and Olivia was the young wife who had gotten up early and put on an apron to feed him.

Nora was the one on the stairs who didn’t belong in the picture, and everything sweet about the night before drained out of her.

“Nora, you’re up! Come and eat with us.”

She had been about to turn around and go back up when Olivia called out to her, warm as anything.

Olivia turned to Bess as well. “Go and get Nora a bowl and a spoon.”

She was playing hostess with more enthusiasm than Nora, who actually ran the house, had ever managed.

Julian looked up. “Morning.”

Nora nodded to him, then greeted Constance. “Good morning, Grandma.”

Constance was all smiles. “Come and sit down. What are you doing standing up there?”

Nora took the chair next to Julian and looked up at Bess, who had already gone past her. “I’ll take those.”

Bess had been about to set the bowl and spoon on the other side of the table. She glanced at Olivia first, and ‘only then put them down in front of Nora.

That small glance didn’t get past Nora. Her brows drew together and smoothed out again just as fast.

She held the bowl out to Olivia with a light smile. “Olivia, pour me some of that broth.”

It came out as an order, not a request.

Olivia’s face tightened before she smiled and turned her down. “I’m so sorry, Nora. You came down a little late and we’ve finished it.
