Reborn to Marry My Best Friend's Uncle novel Chapter 228

Annie packed her things overnight. She only brought a few changes of clothes, stuffed into a small suitcase.

Gary saw what she was doing and was a bit puzzled, but he didn't probe. "Ms. Steward, it's so late. Do you want me to have the driver take you?"

"No need, Gary. I'll just take a cab back," Annie said, declining Gary's kind offer.

Dragging her suitcase alone, she walked out of the Steward residence. The night wind was chilly, brushing her face and cooling her chaotic thoughts a little.

Christian was on a business trip, and there was no telling when he would return. It was perfect, as it gave her the breathing room and time to do what she had to. She could go back to the apartment, take all her things, and then disappear from his world completely.

The cab stopped downstairs at the apartment. Annie paid him and pulled her suitcase through the entrance. As the elevator numbers climbed higher and higher, her heart sank lower and lower.

Standing before the familiar door, she took a deep breath and unlocked it with her fingerprint. The door opened. It was pitch-black inside, and it was so quiet she could've heard a pin drop.

The tension in Annie's body quietly unraveled in that moment. So, Christian really wasn't here. She exhaled in relief, closed the door behind her, and felt her hand along the wall to turn on the light.

Just as her fingertips were about to touch the switch, a hand shot out from the darkness and clamped precisely around her wrist. She was yanked forward, her back slamming into the cold wall with a dull thud.

A tall figure loomed over her completely, his warm, alcohol-tinged breath hitting her ear. "Ann, what you're doing is not okay."

Annie froze in an instant, and her mind was blank.

Christian? Wasn't he on a business trip? In a split-second, she understood everything. The business trip was fake. That text was just another lie.

The tension that had just vanished a minute ago came back with a vengeance, and a chill ran across her whole body. So, he had been here all along, waiting for her to walk right into his trap.

Annie immediately raised her hand and shoved Christian with everything she had. Then, she pushed the light switch in the living room. Looking at him, the last shred of her ridiculous wishful thinking was ground to dust.

She forced out the words, her voice as cold as ice. "I came back to get my stuff. After all, we're in a partnership, and now Grandma no longer doubts our relationship. If you have time, we can go and—"

Annie didn't get to finish her sentence about the divorce. Christian suddenly bent down, seized her chin, and kissed her hard with a near-brutal force. There was no gentleness in that kiss at all.

Pinned between the wall and his searing chest, Annie couldn't move. She pushed and pounded at his shoulder, but couldn't move him an inch. His presence engulfed her, leaving her nowhere to run.
