Reborn to Marry My Best Friend's Uncle novel Chapter 236

Annie didn't know how she got back to the apartment.

She moved like a machine, unlocking the door and changing her shoes.

The living room lights were on. Christian had just carried out the last dish from the kitchen.

He was still wearing an apron. A man who was usually so refined and untouchable looked gentle and domestic now.

When he saw her come in, his lips curved up instinctively, and relief flickered in his eyes, as though he had finally gotten something back that he had almost lost.

But the moment his gaze landed on her face, that smile froze.

He wanted to apologize.

"Ann . . . you…" He set that plate down and strode toward her.

The words stuck in his throat.

He saw her reddened eyes. In those clear eyes was a dead, hollow emptiness.

"What happened?" Without meaning to, his voice softened.

He reached out, wanting to touch her face.

Annie looked at the perfectly timed worry and concern on his face and felt nothing but bitter irony.

Even now, he was still acting. Acting like a considerate husband, acting out a scene of devotion.

In this world, what was real anymore?

Her parents, her family, and now even the contract husband she had picked up in desperation were all living inside a carefully woven lie.

She felt like a clown abandoned by the entire world.

A split second before his fingertips could touch her, Annie took a sharp step back.

"My business has nothing to do with you. Mr. Parker, I don't think our relationship is close enough for that."

Christian went rigid. His hand suspended in midair lowered slowly.

Every explanation, every apology, died in his throat because of that single sentence.

He knew she was still angry at him, angry about his earlier suspicion and the lies he had told.

He deserved it.

"Sean—" He wanted to say that he already knew about Sean. He knew she was taking revenge, not clinging to old feelings.

He was a bastard. He had misunderstood her.

"Don't bring him up." Annie cut him off coldly.

She did not want to hear a single word about lies or deception.

She did not spare him another glance. She turned and walked straight into her bedroom.

The door slammed shut, separating two worlds.

Christian stood alone in the empty living room, as if he'd fallen into an ice cellar.

He truly did not understand.

He knew he was wrong, but her reaction was too intense, too absolute.
