Annie lifted her eyes and looked at Suzanna in silence.
"Suzie, how long have we known each other?"
Suzanna froze at the question. She instinctively counted on her fingers. "If we count from high school . . . about ten years, right?"
"Yes. Ten years."
Annie tugged at the corner of her mouth in self mockery. She threw off the blanket and started to get out of bed.
Suzanna panicked and grabbed her arm to stop her.
"Ann, what is going on with you? What do you mean by that? I already told you everything about those embarrassing flings of mine! Do you even still think of me as your friend?"
Annie's steps stopped cold.
Friend.
Right now, the word sounded so bitterly ironic.
With her back to Suzanna, she stayed silent for a long time before asking calmly, "Who exactly is Christian Parker?"
The expression on Suzanna's face instantly stiffened.
All her bluster, all her righteous confidence, shattered in that moment.
She opened her mouth, but she could not get a single word out.
The ten million dollars she had not received yet suddenly felt scorching hot, like a branding iron pressed hard against her heart.
Annie . . . Annie knew? How did she find out?
Watching her best friend's face go deathly pale and her eyes dart away, Annie understood everything.
The last bit of warmth in her chest finally drained away.
She did not ask anything else. She lifted her foot and started to leave.
"Ann!" Suzanna completely lost it. She grabbed Annie's hand, and without thinking, shoved all the blame onto someone else.
"It's not what you think! This is all Uncle Chris' fault! He made me keep it from you! He said he had his reasons. He was afraid you'd overthink it if you knew who he was. I . . . I didn't have a choice!"
