Rejected and Pregnant I Fled The Pack (Evelyn and Damon) novel Chapter 263

I considered her words, understanding the genuine wisdom embedded within her careful guidance, though continued resistance remained present beneath my attempted acceptance.

"How did you and Dad manage it," I asked quietly, "throughout everything with Genevieve initially, and later with Damian's violence? All that accumulated crisis and danger?"

"We leaned on each other," she said gently. "And genuinely, we made mistakes along the way, occasionally neglecting our own needs until exhaustion or stress forced necessary recalibration. I don't want you repeating those same mistakes, Ethan, particularly given how significant this relationship with Nadia has clearly already become."

I nodded slowly, appreciating her honest acknowledgment of their own imperfect journey rather than simply presenting idealized wisdom disconnected from genuine, lived experience.

"I keep thinking," I said quietly, working through my own genuine reflection, "about everything my previous carelessness apparently contributed toward this entire situation. If I hadn't spent years genuinely hurting multiple women throughout this territory, perhaps this particular threat wouldn't have found such fertile ground to actually develop and escalate."

"That's a difficult, complicated thought," my mother said carefully. "There's genuine truth in recognizing how your previous behavior created circumstances that potentially contributed to this situation's escalation. But Ethan, that doesn't mean you're entirely responsible for the deliberate, calculated cruelty these individuals have chosen to inflict against Nadia specifically."

"I understand that distinction intellectually," I said, echoing similar words Nadia had offered me previously regarding her own complicated guilt. "But it's genuinely difficult separating that understanding from the emotional weight of recognizing my own accumulated mistakes have contributed toward her continued suffering."

My mother reached over, taking my hand gently. "Growth requires acknowledging genuine mistakes without allowing that acknowledgment to entirely consume your capacity for continued, positive action," she said softly. "You've already demonstrated remarkable transformation these past several days, Ethan. Continue building on that genuine progress, rather than allowing accumulated guilt to paralyze your continued efforts."

I nodded, appreciating her steady, wise guidance despite the continued difficulty of actually processing everything currently unfolding around us.
