I studied him carefully, understanding the genuine complexity of what he was navigating-real, apparently sincere change, colliding awkwardly with the messy, unresolved consequences of decades of entirely different behavior.
“You should tell her,” I said carefully. “Sooner rather than later. If she’s actually considering reconciliation, she deserves to know the full truth, not just convenient pieces of it.”
“You’re right,” he said, something tired and resigned in his voice. “I’ve been telling myself I’d wait for the right moment, but I think that’s simply cowardice dressed up as consideration.”
He shifted slightly then, wincing more sharply this time, and I watched with growing alarm as his hand moved to press against his chest, genuine pain visible across his features.
“Are you okay,” I asked immediately, alarm sharpening my voice.
“I don’t-” He stopped, breathing tightening, his face paling rapidly. “I think I need the healers. Now.”
I moved quickly, carefully taking Willow back from his weakening grip, and pressed the call button beside his bed with my free hand, my heart pounding as I watched his breathing continue to labor, his face growing increasingly pale.
“Stay with me,” I said, keeping my voice as steady as I could manage despite the fear building sharp in my chest. “Help is coming.”
The healers rushed in within moments, immediately checking his vitals, their expressions shifting quickly into focused, professional urgency.
“His heart rate’s spiking again,” one of them said, already moving to adjust his monitoring equipment.” We need to get him stabilized immediately.”
I stepped back to give them room, holding Willow close, watching anxiously as they worked, old fear from the previous crisis flooding back sharp and immediate.
“Should I call Damon,” I asked, my voice tight with worry.
“Please,” the lead healer said, not looking up from her work. “And quickly.”
I pulled out my phone with shaking hands, dialing Damon immediately, my heart still pounding as I watched the healers continue their urgent work around his bed.
“Evelyn?” Damon’s voice came through immediately, some instinctive alarm already evident in his tone at the unexpected call.
“You need to come to the medical wing now,” I said, keeping my voice as steady as I could manage despite the fear coursing through me. “Your father’s having chest pain again. The healers are with him.
now.”
“I’m coming,” he said immediately, already sounding like he was moving. “Is he conscious? Stable?”

“Conscious, but in obvious pain,” I said, watching the healers continue their work. “They’re stabilizing him
now.”
“I’ll be there in minutes.”
I ended the call, holding Willow close, watching anxiously as the healers continued working to stabilize him, genuine fear and confusion both tangling together in my chest-fear for his condition, confusion about the strange, unresolved history I’d just witnessed with that unnamed woman, worry about what stress might have actually triggered this fresh crisis.
Damon arrived within minutes, breathless and clearly alarmed, immediately moving to my side, his eyes scanning the room with sharp, urgent attention.
“What happened,” he asked, watching the healers work.
“He was talking with me, about Willow, about needing to change,” I said quietly, keeping my voice low enough not to add further stress to the tense room. “Then a woman came in, someone from his past apparently, and he told her to leave, told her whatever arrangement they’d had was over. After she left, he started having chest pain again.”
Damon’s expression tightened, understanding clearly registering despite the chaos of the moment. Stress-related, probably, given everything he’s been navigating this week.”
“Probably,” I agreed, watching the healers finally begin to ease their urgent pace slightly, his vitals apparently stabilizing under their careful attention.

The lead healer approached us a few minutes later, her expression carrying cautious reassurance. “He’s stabilizing. This appears to have been a stress response rather than another cardiac event requiring immediate surgical intervention, but we’re keeping him under close observation regardless, given his recent surgery.”
Relief flooded through me, though old worry remained present beneath it, understanding how fragile his recovery apparently still was, how easily stress and emotional upheaval could threaten the careful, gradual healing his body still needed.
“Can we see him,” Damon asked.
“Briefly,” the healer confirmed. “He needs calm and rest, not continued emotional strain.”
We made our way into his room together, finding him pale but breathing more easily now, his eyes finding ours with obvious exhaustion and lingering distress.
“I’m sorry,” he said weakly, his voice thin. “I didn’t mean to frighten either of you.”
“Don’t apologize,” Damon said gently, moving to sit beside him. “Just rest. We’ll talk about everything else once you’re actually stronger.”
