Chapter 11
Damon pov
I stalked into my office and slammed the door hard enough that the frame cracked along one hinge, the sound splintering through the room like a gunshot. I barely registered it. Barely registered anything except the hollow, ringing static that had taken up residence in my chest since I’d watched her car disappear down that drive.
*She left me.*
I said it out loud, to no one, my voice sounding foreign even to my own ears. *She actually left
I paced the length of my office, back and forth, my wolf pacing right alongside me in some parallel current of misery, both of us equally useless, equally unable to fix the thing we’d broken. Every lap past my desk brought fresh waves of it-disbelief curdling into panic, panic curdling into a kind of directionless fury that had nowhere productive to land.
I pulled out my phone before I’d even consciously decided to.
*Evelyn, please answer me.*
I stared at the screen for a full minute after sending it, willing three dots to appear, willing anything. Nothing came. I paced another lap.
*I know I don’t deserve you to respond. I just need to know you’re safe.*
Still nothing. The silence on the other end felt like its own kind of accusation, worse somehow than if she’d sent back something furious. At least fury would have meant she was still engaging with me at all.
*This is insane, Evelyn. You can’t just leave the pack. You have no protection out there. Do you understand what could happen to an unprotected she-wolf traveling alone?*/*
I read that one back after I’d sent it and hated myself immediately-hated how it sounded less like concern and more like another thinly veiled threat, another attempt to frighten her back into compliance instead of actually reckoning with what I’d done to drive her out in the first place. I typed another message anyway, unable to stop myself now that the floodgates had opened.
*I’m sorry. That’s not what I meant. I’m scared, Evelyn. I’m scared something will happen to you out there and I won’t be able to feel it through the bond in time to help.*
*Please just tell me you’re okay. That’s all I’m asking.*
The office door creaked open behind me, and I caught Marissa’s scent before I even turned around-jasmine and vanilla, a scent that used to feel comforting and now made something in

my stomach twist with something close to revulsion.
“Damon.” Her voice was soft, careful, the way you’d approach something wounded and unpredictable. “I heard what happened.”
I didn’t answer her. I was already typing again.
*You don’t have to come back to me. I understand if that bridge is burned. But please, at least tell me where you’re going so I know you’re safe.*
“Damon.” Marissa moved further into the room, and I felt her hand land lightly on my arm. I pulled away from the contact almost violently, the phone nearly slipping from my grip.
“Don’t.” The word came out rougher than I intended, and I saw her flinch back, hurt flickering across her face. I didn’t have room in me to care about that right now, not with the static in my chest screaming louder with every unanswered text.
“I just wanted to see if you were alright,” she said, quieter now, some of the earlier softness in her voice giving way to something more guarded.
“Alright?” I let out a laugh that had no humor in it at all, dragging a hand through my hair. ” My mate just drove off the pack lands, potentially pregnant, completely unprotected, because of what we did. I’m not alright, Marissa. I don’t think I’m ever going to be alright again.”
Something in her expression shifted-confusion, maybe, or the first real crack of guilt I’d seen from her since this whole disaster began. Pregnant?”
