Chapter 19
Damon pov
I didn’t sleep that night. Didn’t try to.
Instead, I sat at my desk long after the pack house had gone quiet, staring at a stack of tracker reports I’d already memorized, turning over the same impossible math again and again. Evelyn was out there, pregnant, and I had no idea where. Marissa was down the hall, pregnant too, and increasingly certain of what she believed that entitled her to. She has been trying to sleep with me and touch me, but I push her away each time. I can’t even get hard around her
now.
I needed Evelyn back. Not just for the pack, not just for whatever political mess my father was already maneuvering around — I needed her back because three months of silence had stripped away every excuse I’d been hiding behind, and what was left underneath was simple: I’d loved her before I ever touched Marissa, and I’d thrown it away for something that meant nothing next to it. My child deserved a father who fought for that, not one who settled for succession math.
A knock interrupted the thought. Marissa, unsurprisingly, letting herself in before I’d answered. She was getting bolder with this, and her demands I make her Luna. She keeps begging and trying to lure me into her bed. I refuse each time.
“We need to talk about the pregnancy,” she said, arms crossed, chin lifted in a way that told me exactly what conversation this actually was. About what happens next. About my position here.” Her she goes again wanting to become Luna when she was qualified for it.
“Your position.” I looked at her. Was she serious right now. She keeps pushing this narrative. She is constantly pushing for more. She wants what I can’t give. I watch her hand move to her belly and feel nothing for her. The last didn’t last long and it made me fuck up my mate relationship. Evelyn was right. I really kept the old traditions going. My dad ruined this pack. He loved fucking random women and rubbing it in my mom’s face. My mother and Evelyn deserve better than we can both give them. If only I realized this before I fucked Marissa. I sighed again.
“I’m carrying your child, Damon.” Her voice was steady, rehearsed. “That has to mean something. I should be recognized. Trained as Luna, if-” This seems to be all she wants now. a title so she can be powerful.
“No.”
The word came out flat, immediate, with none of the guilt I’d been drowning in for months softening it. Something in her face flickered – surprise, maybe, that I hadn’t hesitated at all. Yes I fucked her but she wasn’t cut out for a title. I don’t care how heartless it is I won’t give her a title. My Luna is Evelyn and nobody else with fill that roll. Evelyn is what moon Goddess

chose for me and even though I fucked it up I will fix it.
“You don’t get to decide that just because you’re angry at me,” she said. Her voice was getting closer to hysteria. She keeps crying and begging everyday.
“I’m not deciding it because I’m angry.” I stood, finally, weeks of paralysis burning off into something clearer. “I’m deciding it because Evelyn is my mate. Marked, bonded, still legally Luna whether she’s standing in this pack house or not. That doesn’t change because of what you and I did. It doesn’t change because you’re pregnant too. I’m going to find her, and I’m going to spend whatever time it takes trying to earn back a fraction of what I threw away. That’s not a position I can hand to you instead, no matter how badly you want it.”
“So what am I supposed to be?” Her voice cracked. “Some footnote? Raising your child on the side while she gets everything?” I sigh loudly. I’m not making this botch a Luna or any other rank she feels she is entitled to.
“You’re the mother of my child, and I’ll take care of both of you,” I said, quieter now. “That’s not nothing. But it was never going to be the same thing as what I had with her, Marissa. I think some part of you always knew that, even three months ago.” She had to see it was just sex and nothing more. Evelyn is my life.
