just unfolded on the other side of the apartment door.

I sat down heavily in the armchair by the window, replaying the entire conversation, trying to reconcile the broken, apologetic man who’d just stood on my doorstep with everything I knew about him from the past several months–the enforcers, the threats, the cold, calculating authority Damon had described in such vivid, unsettling detail.

Maybe it was genuine. People did sometimes change, especially when everything they’d built their entire identity around came crashing down all at once, the way his clearly had over these past few days. Or maybe Sarah was right to be cautious, maybe this was simply a longer, more patient version of exactly the manipulation he’d already tried and failed at more directly.

I didn’t know which version was true. But sitting there in the quiet aftermath, listening to Willow’s soft, steady breathing from the next room, I understood that whatever came next, I intended to stay just as carefully alert as I had been from the very beginning, however the coming days actually unfolded.

Damon returned less than twenty minutes later, Callum having clearly relayed what happened, worry etched into every line of his face as he crossed the room to check on me and Willow both.

“Are you alright?” he asked, kneeling beside my chair, searching my face carefully. “Sarah told Callum what happened. I came as fast as I could.”

“I’m alright,” I said, and found, somewhat to my own surprise, that I actually meant it. “Your father apologized, Damon. Genuinely, or at least it seemed that way. I don’t fully know what to make of it yet.”

Something complicated crossed Damon’s expression, surprise and cautious hope both visible beneath the lingering worry. “He’s never apologized for anything in his entire life. Not once, that I can remember.”

“Maybe that’s exactly why I’m not sure whether to trust it,” I admitted. “But it happened. And for now, at least, I think we just have to wait and see what he actually does next, instead of just what he says.

Damon nodded slowly, taking my hand gently in his, and we sat together in the quiet evening light, both of us uncertain, both of us cautiously hopeful despite everything, waiting to see whether this strange, unexpected shift actually meant something lasting, or whether it was simply one more turn in a much longer, more complicated road still stretching out ahead of all of us.

Chapter 59

Damon pov

I was three sentences into reviewing a supply ledger with Callum when my phone buzzed against the desk, and something in the immediate, sharp way it demanded my attention made me abandon the conversation entirely.

*Sarah: Your father just stopped by Evelyn’s. Talked with her on the doorstep, seemed calm, he’s gone now. Evelyn’s fine but thought you should know immediately.*

I read it twice, my stomach dropping with a cold, sudden lurch that had nothing to do with the careful, measured calm of Sarah’s actual wording.

“What is it,” Callum asked, already standing, reading whatever alarm had crossed my face.

“My father went to Evelyn’s.” I was already moving, grabbing my jacket off the back of the chair, adrenaline flooding through me so fast I barely registered standing up. “Alone, apparently. Sarah says she’s fine, but I need to see that for myself.”

“I’ll come with you,” Callum said, falling into step immediately, though I was already halfway to the door, barely waiting for him to catch up.

The walk back to Evelyn’s quarters felt agonizingly long, my mind racing through every possible version of what ” he’s gone now” might actually mean, every worst-case scenario I could construct from two days of watching my father grow increasingly unpredictable. He’d been quiet for two full days, and now, the moment I stepped away for less than half an hour, he’d apparently walked straight to the one place I’d been most careful to protect.

I didn’t fully register the specific fear driving me until I was almost at her door-not just protective instinct, but something sharper, something closer to genuine panic at the thought of my father alone with Evelyn and Willow, no witnesses beyond a single warrior who, however capable, was still just one person against whatever unpredictable state he might have arrived in.

I pushed through the door without knocking, my heart pounding, and found Evelyn sitting calmly in the armchair by the window, Willow’s soft, even breathing audible from the crib in the next room, everything about the scene entirely peaceful, entirely undisturbed.

“Evelyn.” Her name came out rough, relief and lingering panic both tangled together. “Are you okay? What happened?”

She looked up at me, something gentle and slightly amused crossing her tired expression at the obvious state I’d arrived in. “I’m fine, Damon. Sit down before you wear a hole in my floor.”

I forced myself to breathe, forced my racing heart to slow slightly, and lowered myself onto the edge of the small couch across from her, Callum settling quietly near the doorway behind me.

“Tell me everything,” I said. “Exactly what happened, exactly what he said.”

“He knocked,” Evelyn said, her voice steady despite everything. “Alone, no enforcers, which I noticed immediately. I didn’t open the door fully at first, kept Sarah on standby the moment I saw him. He asked for five minutes, said he wasn’t there to threaten anything.” She paused, watching my reaction carefully. “He apologized, Damon. For the enforcers at the hospital, for everything he put me through, for whatever role he played in raising you to believe what happened with Marissa was acceptable in the first place.”

I stared at her, disbelief settling heavy in my chest. “He’s never apologized for anything in his entire life. Not to me, not to my mother, not once that I can actually remember.”
