Chapter 65
Evelyn pov
Willow had just finished nursing, drowsy and heavy against my shoulder, when Callum knocked softly and let himself into the sitting room, his expression carrying a puzzled kind of alertness I hadn’t seen from him before.
“There’s a call coming through,” he said, holding up my phone, which he’d apparently answered on the house line while I was occupied with Willow. “It’s routed through pack channels. Allied pack-the Ashford territory, up north. They’re asking for you specifically.”
I stared at him, genuine confusion settling in alongside a faint prickle of unease. “Me? I don’t know anyone in the Ashford pack. I’ve never even met anyone from an allied territory, let alone given them a way to reach me directly.

“That’s what confused me too,” Callum admitted, still holding the phone out. “They said it’s important. Personal, not pack business. Do you want to take it?”
I hesitated, shifting Willow carefully against my shoulder, before nodding slowly. “Put it through. But stay, if you don’t mind. Just in case this is something strange.
Callum nodded, connecting the call and stepping back respectfully, though he remained near the doorway, clearly intending to listen in case anything concerning developed.
“Hello?” I said carefully, my voice steadier than the uncertainty actually sitting in my chest.
“Evelyn?” The voice on the other end was female, warm but hesitant, carrying an unfamiliar accent I couldn’t quite place. “My name is Charlotte. I’m the Beta’s mate here in Ashford territory. I hope this isn’t too strange, reaching out like this.”
“I don’t understand how you even have this number,” I said honestly. “I’ve never had contact with your pack before.”
“I know, and I’m sorry for the confusion.” Charlotte’s voice carried genuine warmth despite the awkward circumstances. “I actually reached out through mutual contacts-word travels between allied packs, especially about something like the council session a few days ago. Your name came up, and something about your situation struck a chord with me. I hope you don’t mind that I tracked down a way to reach you directly.”
I glanced toward Callum, who was listening carefully, his expression still cautious but not alarmed. “What exactly struck a chord,” I asked carefully.
“I left my own pack once,” Charlotte said quietly. “Years ago, before I found my way here to Ashford. Similar circumstances to what I understand happened with you-a mate who betrayed the bond, a pack that expected me to simply accept it. I ran, built a life on my own for almost two years before I found this place, found my actual mate here instead.” She paused. “When I heard what happened with your council session, heard that you’d actually gone back to face everything instead of staying hidden forever, I wanted to reach out. Not for any particular reason beyond wanting you to know you’re not the only wolf who’s ever had to make that kind of choice.
Something in her voice, genuine and warm despite the strange circumstances of the call, eased some of my initial wariness. “That’s… surprisingly kind, actually. I wasn’t expecting anything like this.”
“I imagine not.” Charlotte’s voice carried a soft, understanding laugh. “I remember how isolating it felt, back when I first left my own pack. Like nobody could possibly understand what that specific kind of betrayal actually felt like, or what it took to survive it alone. I just wanted you to know someone out there does understand, if you ever need to talk to someone who’s actually walked a similar road.”

I felt something unexpected loosen in my chest at that-not quite friendship, not yet, but something adjacent to the possibility of it, some quiet solidarity I hadn’t realized I’d been missing until this stranger’s voice offered it so easily.
“Thank you,” I said, meaning it fully. “That actually means more than you probably realize.”
“There’s something else, too,” Charlotte said, her voice shifting slightly, carrying a more careful, deliberate weight now. “Part of why I reached out isn’t purely personal. Our Alpha’s been watching the situation with your pack’s leadership closely. The council ruling, the shift in authority, everything that’s been unfolding. He asked me to extend an offer, if you’re interested.”
