Rejected and Pregnant I Fled The Pack novel Chapter 8

Chapter 8

Damon pov

I stood frozen in the wreckage of her room for maybe three seconds before my legs made the decision my mind was still arguing with, and I was running.

Down the hallway, past pack members who scattered out of my way, down the stairs two at a time, out through the front doors into the grey morning light. I caught sight of her immediately-Evelyn, duffel bag slung over one shoulder, already crossing the compound toward the small lot where the pack kept a handful of vehicles for runs into town.

“Evelyn!”

She didn’t stop. Didn’t even slow down, her strides purposeful and fast, like she’d already rehearsed this exact path in her mind sometime during the sleepless night before.

I caught up to her just as she reached her car, my hand landing on the door before she could pull it open. She turned to face me, and whatever composure I’d been clinging to on the walk over threatened to shatter entirely at the look in her eyes-not the raw grief from the night before, not even the hard fury from her room minutes ago, but something worse. Something resolved. Something that looked like she’d already grieved everything we’d had and moved past it into a place I couldn’t reach anymore.

By now a small crowd had gathered-pack members drawn by the commotion, drifting closer with the particular morbid curiosity that seemed to follow every piece of drama in a pack this size. I felt their eyes on us, felt the weight of an audience I hadn’t wanted, but some desperate, cornered part of me didn’t care anymore. I was watching everything slip through my fingers, and I reached for the only leverage I had left.

“If you leave,” I said, my voice louder than I meant it, carrying across the lot, “I’m rejecting you.”

The words tasted like poison the moment they left my mouth. I felt them land in the bond between us, felt something recoil on both ends of the connection-my own wolf snarling in protest at the threat, hers going utterly, dangerously still.

Evelyn’s expression didn’t crack. If anything, it hardened further, her eyes going cold in a way that made something in my chest seize with dread.

“Stay,” I pressed on, hating how much I sounded like I was begging now, hating that I’d

resorted to an ultimatum instead of an apology, “or I reject you, Evelyn. Right here. Right now.

For a long moment, she just looked at me. The whole compound seemed to hold its breath, pack members frozen mid-motion, waiting.

“Fine,” she said.

The word landed flat and absolute, loud enough that I knew everyone gathered had heard it clearly. My stomach dropped.

“Do it,” she continued, and now her voice rose, carrying further, deliberate in its volume, like she wanted every single wolf in that lot to hear exactly what she was about to say. “I’d rather run as a rogue for the rest of my life than stay one more day in a pack full of cheaters.”
